If you want to celebrate a sunny Christmas in Europe, Seville is a great place to go. While December is a month with higher predictions than other months, it is more often sunny than not and if it happens to rain, you are excused when sitting inside a warm and cozy café splurging in a tasty Roscon de Reyes and drinking a hot chocolate.

From the airport, you can take the Cercanias train, a bus or a taxi.
Where To Stay: Room Mate Valeria is an excellent option for those who want a chic and central stay. The hotel rooms have comfortable beds and are decorated with colors and natural elements which represent Malaga. It also has a fantastic rooftop terrace with a pool and great views of the port.
If you are looking for a warm winter destination, Malaga is an excellent choice. The city has many things to offer during this time of the year – from sightseeing and visiting its interesting museums to getting festive with the different events that take place in the city center.
One of the main highlights of visiting Malaga at Christmas is its Christmas Lights. They set up a different light display every year, and what is unique is the light show that happens on Larios Street from the end of November to the 6th of January.
Another fantastic Christmas activity to include in your itinerary is visiting the “belén” in the Town Hall.
A “belén” is a nativity scene that is often set up in many Spanish homes at Christmas.
Last but not least, visit the different Christmas Markets across the city center. The most popular one is Paseo del Parque Christmas Market which sells everything from nativity scene figures and Christmas decorations to books.
If you visit Malaga with kids, you must go to the Christmas Market in Muelle Uno (Malaga’s port) too. It has plenty of unique gifts and activities for children, including visiting Santa’s Grotto.

Getting There: Madrid has a large international airport with incoming flights not only from Europe, but internationally as well. The airport is a little way out of the city center but it’s connected by a shuttle bus, metro and of course taxi transfer, although this is expensive.
Where To Stay: There are some really great places to stay in Madrid. To be right in the heart of the action, then Centro, however, this is also one of the pricier areas. Other areas to stay in that are more budget-friendly are Salamanca, Malasaña, Chueca and La Latina.
The Spanish take Christmas seriously, and for about three weeks from December to January, it feels like there’s a non-stop celebration. You could spend two days in Madrid or all of the three weeks. You will find that there is plenty of activities to keep you occupied.
If you’re visiting Madrid in the winter, the festive preparations cause a hive of activity with ice rinks, Christmas decorations and markets popping up all over the city. It is definitely one of the iconic spots for Christmas in Europe.
The air temperature around Christmas is chilly 6-8°C (approx 44°F), however, because of its dry climate, it doesn’t feel as cold as humid destinations, and on a clear blue day, the sunshine can feel blissfully warm.
Popular things to do around Christmas are to enjoy family time, the Spanish will be out all over the city enjoying the holiday season. One place to go is Parque El Retiro. During the festive season, the trees are adorned with lights.
However, if you want to see the best light display in the gardens, then next to Parque El Retiro is the Botanical Gardens. From the end of November through to early January, the main central route is adorned with twinkling Christmas lights, decorated pergolas and illuminated trees.
Each shop will have its own Christmas display, with one of the biggest ones being in El Courte Ingles. Ice rinks and markets are also popping up all over the place, pretty much every square will have one.
A kitsch thing to do during Christmas is to ride on the NaviBus (‘Christmas bus’). The bus does a circuit route around the city’s best displays. The top deck has the best view, but be warned, it gets cold so wrap up warm if you do this.
For a bit of sweet temptation, there’s nothing quite like tucking into a portion of Churros y Chocolate. They are technically available all year round, but it feels extra satisfying on a cold winter afternoon, dipping your Churros (a long finger-like doughnut) into the hot, gloopy chocolate sauce.
The other signature Spanish tradition that appears over Christmas is the Roscon. These sweet, candy-fruit-filled bread can be found in every bakery in the city – they also taste great dipped into the chocolate sauce.

6. Venice, Italy
Venice is a really lovely spot to spend Christmas in Europe.
Location: Venice is located in northeast Italy and it’s the capital city of the Veneto region. The city is based on more than 100 small islands connected one to the other by bridges.

Getting There: The best airport to arrive at is the Venezia Marco Polo airport (VCE). The airport is served by both low-cost airlines like Ryanair and EasyJet and airlines with scheduled flights like Air France, British Airways and KLM.
Another airport you can get to is the Treviso Antonio Canova airport (TSF), only served by Ryanair and Wizz Air. In both cases, there are shuttle buses, taxis or even water taxis and trains to get to the city centre easily.
Where To Stay: The best neighborhoods to stay in Venice are San Marco, San Polo and Dorsoduro. These areas of the city are where most of the important attractions are located and where you can find the best hotels and restaurants too.
San Marco is the busiest district where St. Mark’s Square and Basilica and Doge’s Palace are and for this reason, is also the most expensive. If you’re looking for budget accommodation with fewer tourists, the Dorsoduro and San Polo districts are recommended.
No matter what day of Christmas you arrive on, when looking for things to do in Venice in December what makes it so fascinating is when you arrive and see the palaces and churches covered in fog. This gives visitors a sense of evanescence and mystery.

There is also a covered Christmas market with premium artisanal products to visit located inside the Ca’ Zenobio palace. Look out for local food specialties such as Germkirche (yeast buns filled with Sauerkraut or Lingonberry jam), Daumnidei (fried thumb-sized snacks), Tiroler Speckknödel (bread and bacon dumplings) and Kaspressknödel (pressed cheese bread dumplings).
Winter sports fans will appreciate the wide array and choices of activities in the region. Skiing, snowboarding, ski touring, country cross skiing, sledging, ice skating, snow show walking are just some of the most popular winter sports for visitors. A hot mulled wine or a Jagertee will warm you up from within and add to the Apres Ski experience in Tyrol.
Take part in a Krampus run, held in all villages and cities in the region, on the 5th or 6th of December. This custom is unique to the alps and a must-see if you are visiting at that time. The Christkindl (Christ Child) comes on the 24th of December in the evening hours and that’s when Christmas is celebrated. It is one of those must have experiences when spending Christmas in Europe.
Note that most attractions and museums are closed on the 25th of December, but hotels in the region are sure to have planned a lovely day for all guests.

Getting There: Hallstatt is tucked away in the Austrian Alps. The easiest way to get here is from Salzburg or Vienna. There’s so many things to do in Hallstatt during its Christmas celebration, like exploring the charming and icicle-laden houses of the Old Town or indulging in all of the holiday treats, from glühwein (mulled wine) to the town’s famed cookies.
If you’re visiting with kiddos, Hallstatt offers one of the best Christmas marketing in the world for little ones, with plenty of activities specifically organized to keep the kinder full of holiday spirit.
For example, one of the most iconic activities happens during the first weekend of the Advent calendar. Every year, the children of the neighboring village of Obertraun gather, with candles in hand, along the banks of Lake Hallstatt, for St. Nicholas.
The cheery fellow will arrive via wooden boat onto the shores, bearing a small stack stuffed to the brim with apples, nuts, and oranges. Once St. Nicholas has passed out his treats and read a Christmas poem to the waiting children, he’ll disappear as quickly as he came, back into the darkness of the lake.

For Christmas, Lugano becomes a magical paradise. The local festive markets are opened from the end of November in the city and specifically at the Piazza della Riforma. The markets stands sell local produce (cheeses, meats, honey, sausages, wines etc), handmade gifts and warm local food to snack on!
Alternatively for food, all restaurants are selling local dishes surrounded by candles with a cozy atmosphere. They also provide blankets for those who wish to sit outside. The city itself is beautifully lit along all the little cobblestoned streets and a huge decorated Christmas tree!
Lugano is a cold destination during Winter but you should not expect too much snow as it does not fall as much as other Swiss destinations. However make sure to pack some warm clothes just in case!

You will also find plenty of great things to see and do up the top of Mount Gubałówka, located right in the center of town. Where To Stay: I recommend staying in the Kazimierz neighborhood. This trendy part of town is within walking distance of most of the sites and has plenty of trendy bars and restaurants to choose from.
Situated in the Eastern European country of Poland, Krakow (pronounced kra-kuhf) is the perfect city to spend a weekend exploring. The quintessential medieval old town looks like something straight out of a fairy-tale and is an Instagramer’s dream.
The city has a fascinating history to sink your teeth into, which includes not only ancient legends of dragons and castles but more recent history from World War II also.
Even if you are not a history buff the city has much to offer, from funky street art murals to an excellent restaurant scene, there is truly something for everyone.
Krakow is especially great to visit during the Christmas season. As a majority catholic country, Krakow takes Christmas very seriously so there are always plenty of festive activities to partake in. The main old town square is always beautifully decorated with lights and an enormous Christmas tree and hosts an annual Christmas market.
The iconic Christmas market has been a seasonal staple in Krakow’s main square since the early 14th century. The market runs from mid-November until the first week of January. You will be able to pick up some beautiful local handicrafts which will make unique presents.
Another excellent reason to visit Krakow over the Christmas season is to see the snow! Temperatures in Krakow drop as low as -4℃ (24℉) so you can expect frequent snowfall. The historic buildings of the old town look even more beautiful after a fresh snowfall. Can Christmas in Europe get better than this? I think not!

You can take either the fast and luxurious TGV rail or the cheap and convenient Ouigo train from Paris to Colmar. In around 2 hours and 20 minutes, you may reach Colmar via TGV. Just add 30 minutes to your commute time to take the Ouigo train. Both trains depart from Paris Gare du Est.
