What to wear in Italy In Summer

What to wear in Italy In Summer

Thinking about traveling to Italy soon? Not sure what to wear in Italy in summer?

I published a post recently on what to wear in Italy in October and it was a super big hit so I thought I would enumerate what to wear in Italy in summer too. A big comprehensive guide is really not sufficient to cover all the seasons of this diverse country and tackling them one at a time just seems more prudent if you know what I mean.

I think that one thing that many people don’t realize when packing for Italy is understanding just how much the seasons play a role in the dress code when it comes to fashion in Europe.

Summer can get hot and most people opt for light cotton clothes but spring, autumn and winter can be rather unpredictable.

So what do you do then? Don’t fret!

Luckily for you, I’ve been there. I’ve lived all my life in a tropical country and the flux of seasons flummoxed me when I first hit the continent. Now I’ve mastered the art of figuring out what to wear on a daily basis.

The key to knowing what to wear in Italy in summer (or at any point of time in the year) is staying in touch with the weather forecast and so that you are prepared for everything that comes your way.

Anyways, I’m just going to take the plunge and talk about what to wear in Italy in summer. So bookmark this post. Oh and did I mention that I’m going to include a cool capsule wardrobe in this post too?

Seasons In Italy

I think that it is really important to understand that Italy has a very diverse climate all across the country. This is largely because the country is so long and has very unique terrain. The higher altitudes in the country tend to be colder and receive a great deal more snow than the rest of the country.

The coasts are well known and loved but it is important to understand that the west coast gets a great deal more rain than the east coast. Summers along the coast on the other hand are hot and the mountains are cool.

This is all important because when you plan your trip, you should always remember to check the weather in the individual spots that you are visiting. There may be a difference of as much as 20 degrees Celsius between the two locations and it can make all the difference in how you pack for Italy. Note that it matters based on locations and not just how many days you stay. So this would work if you had two days or two weeks in Italy.

Weather In Italy In Summer

Summer in Italy is super duper hot. I’m serious. Italy used to be one of those places where everyone headed to for the summer sun. I mean, the coast is gorgeous and a cooling dip in the sea is so refreshing. Plus it makes such a great break from the winter chill.

It is important to note however that the temperatures in summer can touch as much as 39oC. This means that it is sweltering hot. With the increased incidence of heatwaves in summer these temperatures are more normal than they used to be. The mountains are a cooler place to be in summer and you should definitely consider them.

What To Wear In Italy In Summer?

Okay so a lot of people ask me what to wear in Italy in summer? The answer is cool loose cotton clothes! This is the gold standard that I mention whenever anyone asks me what to wear in Italy in summer.

Summer months in Italy are from June to August. Generally speaking, the temperatures in Italy in summer are  38–42 °C (100.4–107.6 °F) in the south and 32–35 °C (89.6–95.0 °F) in the north.

As you can imagine, once the temperatures cross 35C, the heat really starts to get to you. While the north of the country is cooler, it isn’t far behind.

So here’s a detailed list of what to wear in Italy in summer.

What Shoes To Wear In Summer?

Summer is the best time to head out on hikes or to lounge at the beach but the problem with that is that you need more than one type of shoes. I think that this is the main problem when it comes to an Italy packing list for summer. Most of the space is dedicated to shoes! So obviously when it comes to what to wear in Italy in summer, I really have to talk about the footwear.

Sandals

A pair of brown and white sandals worn by a person with painted toes on a stony ground which is one of the things to wear in Italy in summer

What to wear in Italy in summer when it comes to footwear? A pair of sandals is a must. This goes for both men and women so make note. Throw on an uber comfortable pair and you can walk on the beach or just stroll through the city. In fact, you could even pass it off with a semi-formal attire.

That’s why I always recommend choosing something good. If you have a good pair of sandals, you could even ditch out on the heels which means one item that you do not have to pack.

Recommendation: Crocs

Crocs are one of the versatile shoes that I would pack for Italy in summer

There are many different types of sandals but I do have a particular affinity for Crocs. These are my go to pair for a variety of reasons. They aren’t bulky like many of the other designs and look ultra cute.

Plus they drive quickly and are easy to clean after hitting the beach. Unlike many beach / walking sandals, this croc’s design can easily be paired with some semi formal or casual attires which makes it even more versatile.

It is also really comfortable so if you plan on walking a lot, you aren’t going to be rubbing your heels with these.

“This pair of crocs are really light weight and super comfortable when my feet are in them. I initially bought it for going to splash pads with my kids since the material dries faster than my other pairs of sandals.

Last week, I wore these and walked about one hour in New York, and my feet did not hurt even a little! That’s pretty amazing! definitely didn’t expect Crocs can do a job like that! I will recommend it!”

And if you are interested there are a number of different colors that are available too. I have two pairs of these and I know that when those wear out, I will be replacing them with the same model again. Definitely one of the things that are high on my list of what to wear in Italy in summer and what to pack for the trip.

Water Shoes

Pink and black water shoes which are perfect if you are packing for Italy in summer.

Have you ever heard about water shoes? These shoes are designed to be worn on the beach so that sharp rocks or broken coral pieces don’t hurt your feet. Trust me! These are total game changers. I saw people wearing these in Cannes during my first visit to Europe and ever since then, they have been part of my packing list whenever I head to a beach.

The best part about the water shoes is that you also use them as footwear for the beach. They wash well and dry fast.

Recommendation: SEEKWAY

Ridiculously comfortable! Yup that’s the Seekway in a nutshell. First off, they dry off quickly which means that it is super easy to maintain. They also look like sneakers so you can use them as walking shoes too!

Another great feature is that they really light weight. Now when it comes to this, you will also notice that they fold up nicely when it comes to packing your bag which makes it great as part of an Italy capsule wardrobe.

“While I ABSOLUTELY LOVE my water shoes I wish I had gotten a different color because white got TRASHED at Lost Lake in OR on their first adventure. But as far as comfort, you’ll not find better. My daughter tried to steal mine, so I ended up getting her a pair in pink and she LOVES them too. Very very comfy.”

I mean you could skip the walking shoes with this one and just pack a pair of comfy good looking sandals.

Walking Shoes

What to wear in Italy in summer when it comes to footwear? Generally speaking I tell people to choose between a cool pair of walking shoes or a pair of sneakers. Now if you are headed out on treks then you could also replace them with a pair of hiking shoes because they are rather versatile. You can wear them when walking around the city or when hitting the hiking trails in the countryside.

A Pair Of Heels

This is a one of the optional items on my list of what to wear in Italy for summer but this really depends on the person traveling. I personally rarely carry a pair of heels but largely because I prefer a nice pair of sandals. If you love dressing up, I would suggest getting a nice pair of black or white heels depending on the attire you carry. It can really accentuate your look.

Beachwear

Swimsuits, a sarong, sunglasses and a hat strung on a line are some of the few things that you should pack when you head to Italy in summer

What to wear in Italy in summer? Beach clothes are a must!

Many of the people who travel to Italy head to the beach and why wouldn’t they? The long sandy beaches are the perfect place to be during the hot summer days. A cool dip in the sea is the perfect way to refresh yourself and beat the heat.

Swimwear

There are so many different kinds of swimwear that you could choose from and Italy is pretty accepting of it all. So if you want to don a one piece or a string bikini by all means do.

Just make sure to pack one when you travel. I mean you could buy one when you reach there. I prefer to have one of my ultra comfy suits with me when I travel. If I find something that intrigues me, I pick it up otherwise I have my old trusty with me!

Recommendations

Bikini / Swimsuit Coverup

A lady with an oversized tshirt and loose blonde hair on a beach is one of the best things to pack when heading to Italy.

What to wear in Italy in summer? I highly recommend carrying an uber cute swimsuit coverup!

I think one of the best things to pack when heading to the beach is a cute swimsuit coverup. There are loads of different types. Some are made of net, others are like ponchos, people use sarongs BUT my favorite is always an oversized shirt.

Seriously! I’m really not joking. Hear me out will you? The oversized shirt is pretty easy to don, it’s cool and airy which is a must when the climate is hot. If you pick something with a quick dry fabric you are literally golden. Plus, these can just be tucked into your shorts or your jeans for a really cool look.

No more heading back to the hotel to change before hitting the town. And if you pick a cool design, you can even get away with it as semi-formal attire especially if you pair it with a nice scarf or other accessories.

The multifunctional aspect of it is brilliant when you are packing light for Italy in summer.

The Blooming Jelly’s Cover Up

Swimsuit coverup

⭐️ Rating: 4.6/5 (453 Reviews) Price: $31.44 Details: Read more on Amazon!

The Blooming Jelly’s Cover Up is a large oversized shirt. Many people would choose to ignore this particular piece but it is far from unflattering.

The shirt reaches up to the midthigh and falls graciously along the waist giving you a very appealing look.

“I love this coverup!! It’s so flattering on, especially with the adjustable ties on the sides, just beautiful! It’s a heavier material than expected, but still lightweight and dries quickly. Not that sheer, which I like. Highly recommend!!”

One of the reasons why the Blooming Jelly’s Cover up is so popular is because it is made of a material that is super airy and breathable which makes it perfect for a day in the sun. Did I mention that it also dries super fast? You can see why I recommend it when it comes to what to wear in Italy in summer.

A Beach Bag

You can’t head to the beach without a cool beach bag now can you. Don’t just aim for a beach bag. Think of something that can be used when you hit the streets and want to explore too. I prefer large oversized bags that I can pack a water bottle, a microfiber towel and a nice beach blanket if required.

You will also find that the right beach bag can be a great accessory on your list of what to wear in Italy in summer.

Lightweight Clothing

Pink cotton blouse with denims are the true answer to the question what to wear in Italy in summer.

Still wondering what to wear in Italy? Lightweight clothing is a must. I usually recommend cotton clothes. The best part about lightweight clothing is that it folds up really small. Here are a couple of things that really should be in your baggage.

Light Cotton Shirts

Light cotton shirts are one of the best hacks when it comes to traveling in Italy in summer. They are light and cool in the heat and they look super good.

I mean you know that smart casual look that everyone rocks in the Italian cities? Well cotton shirts are a sure fire way to get that look. Now there are so many different kinds of shirts, my favorites are light pastel ones.

Oh and if by any chance the weather gets particular chilly, wear a button down shirt with a tank top within. Leave a few buttons undone and you have a nice trendy look.

Cool white shirt that should be in your packing list for Italy in Summer.

“I bought the black and another color first and loved them so much I bought 3 more colors. I love that they are casual or a little dressy. I tied the bottom hem at the buttons together so it looks a little more “fitted”. Super cute.

I got all the same size, and some are a little smaller than others, but they still fit great. They are very comfortable and a great summer shirt.”

A Cool Tank Top

A cool tank top is one of the top things that should be on your list of what to pack for Italy in summer.

⭐️ Rating: 4.2/5 (4,602 Reviews) Price: $24.99 Details: Read more on Amazon!

I love a good tank top. Not only is it uber comfortable, it is also part of the cool chick look that many people want.

I particularly love the Ekouaer tank top. It has a double layer which means that it isn’t see through which still being loose and comfortable.

It does not matter whether you pair this with shorts, trousers or a cool skirt.

Definitely one of the items of clothing that you should not forget to pack for Italy in summer. Oh and it comes in 25 different colors. My favorite is the white one because it looks so classy. You can see why this makes a great addition on your list of what to wear in Italy in summer.

Other Lightweight Cotton Clothes That You should Carry

Black floral dress with a clutch and white shoes that are definitely things that I would suggest packing for Italy in summer

Summer Dresses: You can’t go wrong with a couple of cool summer dresses. I usually pick anyway between 2 – 3 for the trip and pair it with a light cardigan at nights. Alternatively a denim jacket does the trick too. These are perfect for those dreamy Italian pics that I’m sure you want to capture.

Comfortable Shorts: No matter whether you are a guy or a gal, you definitely should pack a pair of comfortable cotton shorts. These can be used at the beach or even when you are walking around in the towns. I even use them when I decide to spend time indoors. A pair of comfortable shorts is essential for me. I seriously can’t pack for Italy in summer without it!

A Nice Formal Dress: If you choose to opt for more than two summer dresses, I would suggest swapping out on of them for a nice formal dress. A black dress is always a failsafe as you can pair it with different accessories and it never loses its charm.

What To Wear In Italy In Summer: Accessories

When it comes to what to wear in Italy in summer, we should discuss accessories. You probably know that accessories are what really complete any attire. Now you really don’t want to go overboard when packing for Italy in summer. These are some accessories that you should not be caught in Italy without.

Sunglasses: The sun’s rays can be harsh and trust me on this, a good pair of sunglasses will give you a lot of respite when you are outdoors. This isn’t just at the beach mind you. Even when you are walking in the city or driving, this is one of the things you should not forget to pack.

A Wide Brim Hat: Just like the sunglasses, a wide brim hat will give you a lot of respite from the hot sun. Plus it is such a cool style statement.

A Cool Crossbody Bag: You won’t want to carry your large beach bag everywhere. Instead a small cross body bag which holds all your important things is the way to go. I personally love the Newshows bag. Its stripes are really a trendy.

A Cute Leather Backpack: Alternatively you could swap the crossbody bag with an ultra cute backpack. Something small but functional will totally do the trick. My recommendation is the LXY vegan leather backpack. It’s vegan, its cute and its chic. Plus it even has a laptop sleeve!

What To Wear In Italy In Summer – The Capsule Wardrobe

Okay so I’ve learnt that I’m not the only fan of a capsule wardrobe. With the rise in airfare, a capsule wardrobe allows you to travel uber light and just with a carryon. I know it sounds pretty intimidating but the trick to picking out items for your capsule wardrobe to Italy is to choose multifunctional clothes. In summer this is super easy because you don’t have to pack any layers!
