Europe is one of the popular destinations all years round. I mean who can resist the old world charm that most of the cities have to offer? With the narrow cobbled roads, gorgeous architecture and loads of history linked to every country in Europe, it becomes rather hard to choose a destination.
February in Europe offers a varied kind of climate. You’ll find it warm along the coast and yet you will find snow in the mountains. In general, Europe is still cold BUT it is not impossible to travel. In fact, it is peak season in some of the locations that we talk about.
When it comes to visiting Europe, I tend to want to visit everywhere all at once. So how do you narrow it down? I suggest checking out the top destinations based on the season and the month that you are traveling in. With that in mind, I reached out to numerous other bloggers and have put together a series of best destinations to visit in Europe by month.

You can also fly into Venice’s Marco Polo airport (VCE), where it’s easy to get transportation into the center of town. Note that you won’t be able to drive in Venice city center, so if you arrive by car the easiest way is to park in a lot on the mainland and take the train, water bus, or ferry into Venice.

February is also one of the most exciting months in Venice as the city hosts one of the most iconic carnivals in the world. This amazing event has been taking place since 1162. Take the chance to participate in the festivities and get a costume and mask to attend a mysterious masquerade ball!
Also, don’t miss out on some of the outer islands of Venice. Burano has idyllic colorful buildings, just waiting to have a photo snapped in front of them.
Murano is famous for its gorgeous glass blowing, where you can get a customized piece to commemorate your trip. And visiting Venice in winter means fewer crowds on Murano and Burano, making the experience far more enjoyable!
To get out of the hubbub of the city center, visit Torcello, a small island that has less than 50 residents. It’s a perfect place to meander around in peace and quiet.

One of the best places to visit in February is the quaint city of Cadiz in Southern Spain. While most tourists only spend one day in Cadiz, there is so much to do that you should schedule in a few extra days.
This is especially true if you travel in February in Europe. Cadiz is the oldest city in western Europe and you can experience the oldest carnival in Spain here. In fact, the carnival was adopted from Venice when the city traded with Venice and the new world.
It is also worth noting that the only time the carnival has ever been canceled was during the pandemic in 2020. Even during Franco’s days when all festivities were illegal, the gaditians (people from Cadiz) celebrated the carnival.
Come in time for the carnival and you are up for a street party of a lifetime. The nights are filled with outdoor concerts and comedian groups taking up the street corners. The daytime is crowded with floats in large processions of dressed up people accompanied by music.
But there is so much more to do at this time of the year. Munch on grilled chestnuts as you discover all the historical sites of Cadiz like the cathedral, Santa Catalina Castle, and San Sebastian Castle. Climb the Tavira Tower or go surfing the Atlantic waves. Let’s not forget about all the great tapas from Andalucia that come from this area!

One of the best places to visit in February in Europe is Algarve’s capital city, Faro in southern Portugal. The winter in Algarve is mild with daytime temperatures up to 20 degrees Celsius on a sunny day which makes it a very pleasant destination to escape the cold.
There are many wonderful things to see in Faro city like visit the white and blue tiled cathedral and churches. But this is also the perfect time of the year to go hiking as the temperatures are not too warm as in the summer.
Not only that, but February is a good time to spot flamingos in Ria Formosa Natural Park which stretches from Faro to the Spanish border in the east. You can actually walk straight from Faro beach onto the Ludo trail which is a wonderful trail through the saltwater lagoons and mud flats that make up the natural park.
The trail is flat and easy to follow, you can walk the entire loop in a couple of hours or walk parts of it and return the same way. It is especially beautiful at sunset (which is very early in Portugal in February due to the time zone) when the reflections of the pink and orange sky color the saltwater rivers.

If you are already in Europe (especially Central or Eastern), you’ll probably prefer to hop on a train to get to Budapest.
The capital is served by three railway stations, receiving traffic from places as far as Berlin and as close as Zagreb. Likewise, buses are available from various places in Europe. And during the travel season (May to September), you can take the hydrofoil from Vienna and arrive via the Danube.
Where To Stay: Budapest is dotted with accommodation for all budgets. If you visit over Valentine’s you may want to stay at Central Hotel 21 and Apartments, a 3-star accommodation located close to the Market Hall, the Synagogue, and the National Museum. The hotel offers stylish rooms, with TV, mini-bar, Wi-Fi, and en-suite bathroom.
February in Budapest is not exactly ideal for spending too much time outside (especially if you are not used to cold winters). So, you may want to focus on indoor activities more, although the Danube Promenade is always charming. Just make sure to layer up!
The National Gallery, The House of Hungarian Music, and the Hall of Art are three of the biggest museums you can check out while here. The beautiful St. Stephen (István) Cathedral and the gorgeous Matthias Church should also be on your itinerary.
Make sure to climb in the towers for magnificent views of Budapest. And if you don’t mind the cold, the views from the Fishermen Bastion are also lovely.
