Hauck Freerider Buggy- Is This The Best Budget Double Stroller?

Hauck Freerider Buggy- Is This The Best Budget Double Stroller?

The Hauck Freerider buggy was our top choice when it came to moving about with our kids in the Netherlands. Honestly with two kids under 3 walking anywhere is hard.

The moment we cross 2 kilometers, the older one wants to be carried or put in the stroller and the younger one obligingly walks at a snail pace. As you can imagine, this has made getting around extremely hard.

The solution was obviously to get a fietskar or a buggy attached to a cycle. That however would require storage which we did not have.

The double buggies like the Hauck Roadster Duo and the Baby Jogger City Mini were great but they are broad and a bit unwieldy. These do not work great in supermarkets or in narrow spaces.

Let’s not forget that they are a pain to carry up and down stairs which we had two flights of!

That was how we narrowed down our search to the Hauck Freerider Buggy. To be honest, we did not know what to expect. Shawn thought it would be flimsy because the cost was lower than the other models BUT the reviews were good. So we bit the bullet and bought it!

In retrospect, I must say that I’m happy that we got it and I’ll go into the pros and cons of the model in a bit.

Points To Note About This Review

At the time of using this model our kids were 2 years and 3.5 years old. We needed the stroller as an intermediary for when our elder daughter was too tired to walk, especially since we were house hunting.

Pros About The Hauck Freerider Buggy

Hauck freerider buggy. A double stroller review

After much deliberation, we came to the realization that the pros about the Hauck Freerider buggy definitely outweigh the cons. Which was why we bought the stroller online. Here are the top reasons why we found it so practical for our situation.

1. Assembly

A few of the reviews complained that the Hauck Freerider Buggy was hard to assemble. We had no such issues. In fact, Shawn sat with the kids and they assembled it together which was fun.

Our elder daughter was very excited because she had a spot for herself and kept trying to get into the stroller even before it was assembled.

2. Compactness

Compared to most of the other double strollers, I love how compact the Hauck Freerider Buggy is. It has the width of a single stroller and is just a tad bit longer. The tripod design makes it very stable so if a kid is sitting behind, it does not topple over.

When compared to double strollers like the Baby Jogger City Mini, this is so much more compact and easy to handle. Plus you can take it into supermarkets, trains and buses with relative ease.

3. Maneuverability

You can see why the maneuverability of the Hauck Freerider buggy is so good.

You can see why the maneuverability of the Hauck Freerider buggy is so good.

Maneuverability on this model is also great. I understand that there are a few models that are more expensive than this with better maneuverability but I personally had nothing to complain about. The Hauck Freerider Buggy maneuvered over all the major and minor bumps on the path easily.

I could also take this through the parks because the wheels are large. This helps quite a bit.

4. Weight

The weight of the Hauck Freerider Buggy is a bit heavier than the lighter single strollers but not by much. This is definitely a pro for people like me who need something light. I find it hard to lift up the Dutch stairs otherwise.

That being said, note that it is still very bulky.

5. Rain Cover

You can see how the rain cover covers the entire double stroller.

You can see how the rain cover covers the entire double stroller.

It comes with a rain cover which for us was very important given the Dutch weather. The good part about the rain cover is that it snaps over the entire stroller and not just the front of it so it is very practical.

Many of the strollers don’t come with one and buying it adds an additional cost to purchasing a budget double stroller.

6. Wheels

Large wheels which take all the major and minor bumps on the pavements. This is definitely an improvement from our Joie which would bump the children around quite a bit.

7. It Can Be Used As A Single Stroller

One of the best benefits is that you can detach the back seat and use it as a single stroller. You can see what I mean. Also the back sun cover can be unzipped. I’ve kept it on so you can see how it is attached in the photograph.

Cons Of Hauck Freerider Buggy

1. Folding The Hauck Freerider Buggy

Folding is definitely one of the major cons. The buggy is pretty hard to close.

You need both your hands and even once that is done, it still takes place.

This is in addition to the fact that you have to detach the back of the stroller where the second child sits.

It still can fit in the back of a car. It also works in buses and trains with a bit of difficulty.

The handle of the Hauck Freerider buggy folds lower too.

2. Storage

There is however no place to store the rain cover which is an obvious downside. A small pocket would have made all the difference.

Another downside is there no place to store anything else when the second child is sitting in the Hauck Freerider buggy. This is a downside that I can deal with it because I usually carry a backpack anyway. It is however something that other parents may find an annoyance.

3. Sleeping Position

You can see what I mean about the sleeping position of the Hauck Freerider buggy.

If the seat in the front is lowered into the sleeping position, there is no place for the child sitting behind. The same is true when you attach a car seat to the stroller.

Where To Buy The Hauck Freerider Buggy?

Where to buy the Hauck Freerider buggy

You can walk into stores to buy the Hauck Freerider buggy. I however have tried multiple stores here since I wanted to test it before buying. Unfortunately, I did not find this particular Hauck model anyway. My guess is that all the stores stock the more expensive models.

The best bet is to buy the Hauck Freerider Buggy On Amazon. They usually have great deals on and if you are lucky you can get it for as low as $150! Yes we were that lucky.

“I would definitely recommend this stroller to buy. I have twin daughter and they were perfectly fitting up and down in this stroller.

The stroller is highly flexible and has a superior quality. worth of money. I used it for 4 years until kids were grown up.

I sold it off for a reasonable price..”

Hauck Freerider Buggy – Final Verdict

I think that the Hauck Freerider buggy turned out perfect for us. This buggy is meant for people with children of two different age groups. This is because both children get to sit comfortably in it. While it does work with a car seat, it isn’t the most comfortable for the second child.

What I loved about the Hauck Freerider buggy was that it gave my older daughter a chance to choose. Since she was three years old, she fits in comfortably but as time passes it will get cramped so I assume (and hope) that she will prefer to walk then.

My final thoughts? Well the Hauck Freerider buggy is perfect if you have two children about a year apart. It has great maneuverability and is very good for the price. Honestly don’t hesitate. Buy this Hauck Freerider model now!
