Viana do Castelo is a small city that is located at the north of Portugal. The closest big city to it is Porto and this makes it one of the popular day trips from the city. What I really like is that despite its laid back pace, there are loads of things to do in Viana do Castelo so you are never bored. From museums to festivities, food that will have you drooling to gorgeous beaches and even great day trips to other locations close by.
When we sat discussing our route initially we added in Viana do Castelo because of its proximity to the beach. Shawn was sick during the week we were there so we looked for other alternatives to pass our time.
We were surprised by the numerous activities. That was one of the reasons why I thought I would pen this place down because in my opinion Viana do Castelo is worth more than just a pit stop or a day trip. It is worth spending a couple of days here. Did I mention that the people here are super friendly too!

Before we head on to all the cool things to do in Viana do Castelo let’s talk about logistics in terms of accommodation, transport, parking etc. I found that there are some great places to stay here and they are very central so I’ll add those in too.
Where To Stay In Viana Do Castelo
Most people like me who travel with kids love to stay in the center of the city. The thing about Viana do Castelo is that it isn’t really big. Its easily walkable so no matter which part of the city you stay in, you will still have access to the activities in Viana do Castelo.
We chose to stay in the center right next to the main square and we did no regret it because we could watch all the activities from our window. Pretty convenient considering that we were either sick or just recovering.

Parking In Viana Do Castelo
Parking in Viana do Castelo is not a very big hassle. You can either park on the outskirts of the city. You do need to check on the parking fees before you do or you could choose to park at one of the parking lots. We used Parque 1 Maio and were very happy with the place. The car remained there for four full days.
Transport To Viana Do Castelo
The trains station is right next to the main city. It’s just a short walk from there to the main square which is why many people who visit Viana do Castelo as a day trip from Porto choose to use the train. You can also drive in but make sure you check out where you want to park first.
Things To Do In Viana Do Castelo
1. Historical Center of Viana Do Castelo

One of the biggest attractions in Viana do Castelo is the historical center. It is located right in the heart of the city and is the place where all the main activities and festivities take place. While we were there we saw bands marching through, people dancing in traditional costumes and a lot of performances.
The square also has a fountain at its center and a lot of beautiful buildings that surround it. Since we stayed right next to it, I can attest that it was bustling with people even at night.
2. Se Cathedral of Viana Do Castelo

The Se Cathedral is one of the churches that is located in Viana do Castelo. It is located at the very heart of the city which makes it easy to reach.
The cathedral belongs to the Roman Catholic diocese of the area. You will find that daily mass is said here but at other times the doors are kept open for the visitors.
We found the building hauntingly beautiful, quiet and peaceful.
3. Elevador De Santa Luzia
The Elevador de Sanata Luzia is located right next to the main train station. It is a quick way to scale the hill and reach the Sanctuary of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. My advice is that if you plan on visiting the church, take the elevador up and come down via the steps. It is also important to note that it doesn’t run all night.
If you are pressed for time, book a return ticket. This will take you quickly to the top and back again. You could also choose to drive up but I prefer the elevador de Santa Luzia.
4. Sanctuary of the Sacred Heart Of Jesus

One of the main things to do in Viana do Castelo is to visit the Sanctuary of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Located on the top of a hill at the side of the city, the church has a gorgeous view of the surroundings around. While we were there, we only saw the exterior of the building and not its interiors because it was closed.
There’s a park around it and the views are gorgeous. You can see Viana do Castelo sprawled out in front of you. It is also a great place to watch the sun set in the evenings. Make sure to carry a light sweater because it blows a lot and it can get a bit chilly. There’s even a small restaurant at the top where you can catch a snack or a drink while listening to music. It’s perfect and peaceful.
Many people use this park for a run and its a busy path up and down. Yet despite all this you will find that it isn’t crowded or too busy.
Museums
5. Centro de Mar

6. Museu do Traje de Viana do Castelo

Not everyone realizes it but there are many different types of traditional outfits in Portugal. They aren’t worn frequently nowadays but the colours and designs are still seen in some of their newer trends.
These traditional outfits can be seen when there are feasts or activities. It was interesting to see the similarities with some of our Goan clothes too. If you want to learn about the traditional outfits a very good place to head to is the Museu do Traje. It is one of the centrally located museums in the city. Easily accessible and the building is so pretty.
7. Beaches
Viana do Castelo lies on the coast which means that there are a number of beaches close by. Since we were sick, we did not get a chance to visit them but I will definitely do so the next time we are in the city. That being said, I have to warn you that the water is cold even in summer just like in Espinho. The wind can also be cold.
8. Forte De Santiago Da Barra
Forte de Santiago da Barra is a little on the outskirts of the city but not a far walk away from the center. While many list it as one of the things to do in Viana do Castelo, we only saw it on one of our walks through the city. It was rather late at night so we didn’t venture in either. That’s why I’ve kept it as a footnote here.
Things To Do In Viana Do Castelo For Kids
9. Visit The Playground
Aside from the museums and other activities that I have listed above (all of which are kid friendly), there is also a huge playground called Gill Eanes Playground. It is located right at the banks of the river so you can catch a view and watch the sunset (if you visit in the evenings). The playground is enclosed for younger children which means you can sit and read while they play while knowing they are safe.
There’s always something happening in Viana do Castelo. The trick is to find out what are the events planned for the time that you are in the city. Just the things to do in Viana do Castelo that I have listed above kept us busy for the three days that we were in the city. Are there any other things that you would like to add to the list? Let me know in the comments below.
