Weekend In Amsterdam: 10 Amazing Things To Do In 2024

Everyone should take a trip to Amsterdam at least once in their lives. The people here are universally friendly, and while Dutch is the official language, most of the residents speak fluent English (and one or two other languages also!)

It is a major airline hub in Europe. Many people find themselves with just a weekend in Amsterdam or even less if its a long transit.

There are many advantages to exploring new places like Amsterdam. Not only does it provide an opportunity to see new things and learn about different cultures, but it can also help to broaden your horizons and give you a new perspective on life.

You can even head to Amsterdam beach to enjoy the sandy shores of the city! Amsterdam is just a short train ride from iconic cities like Rotterdam, Den Haag and Utrecht. Makes it so tempting to head there for a weekend.

Do you have a weekend in Amsterdam and have no idea what to do? Or maybe you’ve been to Amsterdam before, but you’re looking for new ideas.

Either way, we’ve got you covered. So put on your comfy shoes, pack a raincoat (just in case), and get ready for an amazing time in the city of canals.

Transport In Amsterdam

If you are going to spend a weekend in Amsterdam, you need to know about the transport in the city. Luckily, getting from one point in the city to the next is remarkably easy as Amsterdam has a good public transport system. So what are your options when it comes to moving from point to point?

Walk: Yes a lot of tourists and locals walk everywhere. Most of the tourist sights are relatively close to each other so walking works. Plus it is easy on the pocket and it works up an appetite.

There are a number of gorgeous cafes and places frequented by locals that you should stop at while you wander through the city. That however is a story for another time.

Cycle: The Dutch love to cycle everywhere. The city is no exception. It is one of those experiences that you should try out even if you spend just a weekend in Amsterdam.

Don’t have a cycle? Not a problem! There are loads of cycle rentals all over the city and you can get all kinds of different (cool) cycles on rent!

Public Transport: Remember I mentioned that the public transport is well connected? Well the card that you are looking for here is the OV Chip card that gives you access to all the forms of public transport. Aka buses, trains and trams.

Check out the I Amsterdam city card, GVB Day pass, and the Amsterdam & Region travel ticket which cover transport in the city plus access to some of the popular tourist spots.

Weekend In Amsterdam: Things To Do In The City

1. Visit the Van Gogh Museum

If you are visiting during this time, be sure to purchase tickets on the museum’s website early, as they tend to sell out several days in advance.

Pro tip: Buy the I Amsterdam card for admission to several attractions in the city as well as the use of public transport.

The canals are iconic and you can’t miss them during your weekend in Amsterdam

The canals are synonymous with Amsterdam, so going on a canal boat tour will give you the quintessential experience. The city’s 165 canals are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Originally intended as a means of trade and transport several centuries ago, today the canals are probably the biggest tourist attraction, where travelers can take in Amsterdam’s beauty on the water.

These canals are some of the most photographed spots in the city and are without a doubt really popular on Instagram too. Make sure to pair it with some funny or quirky quotes and captions on Amsterdam canals before you post them!

Choose a tour on one of the smaller boats versus the bigger boats for a more intimate experience. You can even book your tour online and check out the reviews before heading there. It saves a lot of hassle!

4. The Famous Red Light District

Known as Rosse Buurt to the locals, this infamous section of town is a constant source of curiosity to people the world over, as it is probably the most well-known place for brothels.

Its network of sex shops, brothels, and peep shows is completely legal and well-protected by guards. It’s not all sex-related, however; there are also coffee shops and museums to be explored in this section of town.

At night, it can be quite a sight with swarming tourist crowds as the neon lights reflect on the canal waters. You can stroll through it once in the day and once in the night to truly see how it transforms. It is after all one of the most popular things to do on a weekend in Amsterdam.

Originally built as the City Hall, it became the palace of King Louis Napoleon, and later the Dutch Royal House.

Today it is reserved for royal events such as the King’s New Year reception, and for receiving heads of state.

“Definitely worth a trip, but keep in mind 2 things: even though museum closes at 5 pm, last entry is 4.15 p.m ! Make sure to make it in time.

Then, the whole tour & audio takes about 75 min and plus queueing for each room, allow 1.30-2.00 hrs to do it.”

It is located on Dam Square, in the very heart of Amsterdam. The Royal Palace of Amsterdam is open to the public everyday. Just make sure to book your tickets online so that you do not have to wait in line.

7. Jordaan Neighborhood

Originally built as a neighborhood for the underprivileged, it has undergone years of gentrification as students, artists, and entrepreneurs bring in boutiques, galleries, and restaurants.

As a result, it is arguably the most popular neighborhood in Amsterdam. Wander the charming narrow streets, and visit the Westerkerk and Homomonument.

8. Vondelpark

vondel park

Don’t forget to kick back and relax at Vondel park during your weekend in Amsterdam.

The largest park in the city is over 150 years old! It is a beautiful place to relax and the perfect place to take the kids.

Its popularity means that 10 million visitors come each year to walk their dog, sunbathe, exercise, or enjoy an open-air concert.

The statue of the Dutch poet Vondel is located here and, at three meters high, is an impressive homage to him. You can even book a bike tour here!

9. Nine Little Streets

As the name implies, nine streets that run in between two canals are jam-packed with boutiques ranging from vintage clothing to interior design shops to gift-givers’ havens.

This is a section of town that is not too touristy (yet!) and where the locals come to shop.

10. De Pijp

Also called the Latin Quarter, this section is known for its 19th-century architecture. You will find excellent ethnic restaurants, eclectic shops, and the Heineken Experience! Tranquil Sarphatipark is also here.

Many young people hang out here, giving the place a trendy and beatnik vibe.

Amsterdam is a city that has something for everyone. Whether you’re looking for history, culture, nightlife or just a good time, the city won’t disappoint. With so much to see and do, we recommend spending at least a weekend in Amsterdam to get a taste of everything it has to offer.

If you love museums then check out our guide to the museums in Amsterdam!

Weekend In Amsterdam Itinerary

There is so much that you can do and see in the city that no itinerary should be fixed in stone. We’ve been to Amsterdam multiple times and trust me, each time we head there, our plans change. This weekend in Amsterdam itinerary takes you through the highlights of the city and is great for first time visitors.

If you have already been to some of these locations, swap them out with some of the things to do in Amsterdam that I have listed above.

Friday

If you really want to spend an epic weekend in Amsterdam, I suggest winding up work and heading to the city on Friday. That way you can catch an early start on Saturday morning while simultaneously enjoying the nightlife on Friday night.

Drop off your luggage at your hotel and head out to see the city. I love to get acquainted with any city that I am in first. This usually means just wandering around and taking in the sights.

Amsterdam is a quirky city at that. The whole place looks so different in the day and in the night. One thing that remains constant is the bustling crowds!

Dam Square

I highly recommend spending some time at Dam Square during your weekend in Amsterdam.

I highly recommend spending some time at Dam Square during your weekend in Amsterdam.

Stroll down the main streets and head towards the Dam Square. If you arrive before 4:30 pm you can even visit the Royal Palace of Amsterdam. If you don’t make it in time, don’t worry. The square is gorgeous and you will still enjoy wandering around it.

If you look around, you will see some of the iconic old structures of Amsterdam. The Royal Palace of Amsterdam (Koninklijk Palace), the New Church (Nieuwe Kerk), Madame Tussauds etc are all located around the square. You could even choose to head into the Rippley’s Believe It Or Not Museum.

I always find myself sitting here and watching the crowds go by. It’s fascinating especially during spring and summer. You will find that a lot of locals choose to hang out here.

Red Light District

The Red Light area is an intriguing part of the city .

The Red Light area is an intriguing part of the city .

If it interests you, you can then wander through the Red Light area of Amsterdam. Note the strict instructions that you are not allowed to click photographs of the people in the windows.

I always find it fascinating that this area looks like any other in the day. At night, the streets change completely. It does get pretty busy and you need to watch out for pickpockets.

Catch A Meal

Amsterdam is very multicultural. Name a cuisine that you want to try and it will be there. Plus the cuisine will be pretty authentic. The issue however that we found of late is the inability to catch a vacant table. Yup! We were forced to settle on any place that had a vacant spot because we had two toddlers who were super hungry.

Do yourself a favor and make sure you book a table in advance during peak tourist season.

Saturday

Startup Saturday with a hot cup of coffee. If you are visiting during winter, you will be glad to have a warm cup in your hands because it blows like crazy and boy do you feel cold! I love starting up early in the day especially in summer because there is so much to do in the city.

Rijksmuseum

⭐️ Rating: 4.7/5 (10,377 Reviews) Price: $25.63 per person Duration: Valid for 1 day 📍Meeting Point: Rijksmuseum Details: Read more on Get Your Guide Now!

Start off with the Rijksmuseum. Now I will be honest. I have not been to this museum yet largely because I don’t think the kids are ready for it.

There were way too many museums that were more their current bandwidth that we have been ticking off. All my friends however highly recommend visiting and that is why I have added it in the weekend in Amsterdam itinerary.

The Rijksmuseum is housed in a 19th century building that is both enormous and beautiful. It has loads of artwork by many of the famous Dutch and European artists. Think of it as Amsterdam’s version of the Louvre. So if you love art and can pick just one museum, pick this one!

Museumplein

When you are done with the Rijksmuseum, wander through the gorgeous museum gardens in front. This is the perfect place for picnic lunch or just a short break. There are a couple of restaurants around the museumplein too.

Van Gogh Museum

No weekend in Amsterdam is complete without paying homage to Van Gogh. If you haven’t been to the Van Gogh museum before, put it on your list! It is just a short walk away from the Rijksmuseum. The museum houses his paintings, drawings and even letters.

Though I can understand if some people would give this a pass after visiting the Rijksmuseum. I usually advise people to pick one of the two. This is especially for frequent travelers to Amsterdam.

Vondelpark

Once you are done taking in all the art and culture that the museums have to offer, head over to Vondelpark. This is one of the most impressive parks in Amsterdam and is quite frankly one of its green lungs.

The park has everything that the residents of Amsterdam could possibly want. An open air theater, ponds and even a playground are all part of the park. Vondelpark gets really full during summer and even in winter you will see people running, exercising and playing the in area.

Catch Dinner At De Pijp

De Pijp is an interesting spot to add to your weekend in Amsterdam itinerary.

De Pijp is an interesting spot to add to your weekend in Amsterdam itinerary.

De Pijp is a lovely neighborhood in Amsterdam that has these uber cute little streets. There are loads of middle eastern eateries here. One of the things that you will quickly notice about De Pijp is that the prices of food here are much much cheaper than in central Amsterdam. This is why we love to head here. Plus, as I mentioned, the neighborhood is also pretty chill.

Sunday

Sunday is a nice lazy-ish day. I say that because no matter how many times you head to Amsterdam there is always something more to do or to see. I’ve lost count of the museums I’ve visited and the ones that are still on my bucket list!

Breakfast In The City

Start off with breakfast in the heart of the city. There are loads of options to choose from. My top picks are Omelegg, Pancakes Amsterdam or Greenwoods Singel. All of them offer some incredible items on the menu.

If you want to do something different, you could have breakfast on a boat at Miss G’s Brunch boat. Honestly, the latter is great if the weather is good. If its cold or raining you are better off indoors.

Anne Frank House

⭐️ Rating: 4.8/5 (2339 Reviews) Price: $31.08 per person Duration: 2 hours 📍Meeting Point: Meeting point may vary depending on the option booked. Details: Read more on Get Your Guide Now!

One of the first places that I visited the first time I spent a weekend in Amsterdam was the Anne Frank house. This spot was important to me because I read her diary multiple times as a little girl and it felt almost like a pilgrimage to see where she lived.

The house has been very well preserved and restored. It chronicles everything that happened in her life. You can even see the diary where she wrote.

The tickets to this spot sell out fast and we spent forever in line. My suggestion is to buy your tickets online. It will save you time and you will not be disappointed.

Canal Cruise

Spending a weekend in Amsterdam is not complete without a canal cruise.

Spending a weekend in Amsterdam is not complete without a canal cruise.

After you are done with visiting the Anne Frank house, head out on a canal cruise. This will give you a chance to see the city from a whole different perspective. There are loads of options and different types of cruises that you can head out on. Some of them even have alcohol on board. So take your pick!

Oude Kerk

End your day at the Oude Kerk. This church is absolutely fascinating and is one of the oldest structures in the city. The stained glass work in the church has been preserved over centuries. Many however have sadly been lost.

With its high ceiling and marvelous acoustics, this church is also famous for its musical concerts. If one is playing while you are in the area, make sure not to miss it!
