If its your first time in the city and are wondering where to stay in Istanbul, you will find that the city can feel overwhelming. It expands outwards in all directions and actually spans out onto two different continents. Figuring out where to stay in Istanbul was hard initially. I did a lot of research, spoke to people who lived there, scoured through the maps and finally chose a hotel that matched what I needed.
Since the city is large and has so much to offer, it isn’t really a one option fits everyone scenario. I realized this when we were wandering through the city. The options on where to stay in Istanbul are numerous but the budgets are different.
As with all my accommodation guides, I intend to break this one up based on different regions in Istanbul and the pros and cons of living in each one of them. We’ll take a look at budgets, travel styles and even catch a glimpse at which hotels are the best rated in the area.

Best Areas To Stay In Istanbul
There’s a lot to unpack here and many people will give you different answers when it comes to the best places to stay in Istanbul. I think that instead on just focusing on hotels it is better to understand the layout of the city and know which are the best areas to stay in Istanbul. For the purpose of this section, I’m going to divide Istanbul into a couple of regions. This should help you decide where to stay in Istanbul.
- Sultanahmet
- Sirkeci
- Faith
- Galata
- Cihangir
- Taksim Square
- Kadikoy
Best Areas To Stay In Istanbul For First Timers: Faith

Let’s dig into where to stay in Istanbul but look only at the Faith area first. In order to understand why each place is a good option to stay in, it is important to understand the locations and what they are close to. It is also a nice idea to get a feeling of the vibe that they have. Istanbul is such a big city that even the vibe shifts as you move from one part of the city to another. You have to feel it to know just what I mean.
Generally speaking everyone wants accessibility. First time visitors are a little wary of the public transport system which is why they prefer to stay central. Repeat visitors know that you can easily transverse Istanbul if you stay close to a tram stop. It still takes time, money and effort.
Faith is one of the most popular areas to stay in Istanbul and it is where most of the iconic landmarks are. I’m going to break down Faith into different sections so that we can take a dive into the best places to stay in Faith. Anyways, let’s take a look at all the different options that are available when it comes to the best areas to stay in Istanbul.
Sultanahmet
This is the heart of Istanbul and center where all the main monuments of the city lie. Here you will find the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque are right here. It is one of the most touristic parts of the Istanbul and almost everyone who comes to the city passes through here.
This place is great to stay in if you are short on time and want to cover as much as you can. You however will also be in the most expensive part of the city. Here everything costs more.
Sirkeci
Sirkeci is another neighborhood in the Faith district of Istanbul. It sits right next to the Sultanahmet section of the city and is also very busy. It is here that you will find some of the markets and restaurants. This was where the working class people used to stay and where the bazaars were built. It is much more affordable than Sultanahmet but its also close to everything. You could take the tram from here or just walk.
Beyazit
This is a little further away from the center and is connected via the tram network. Its a busy neighbourhood with the university, Grand Bazaar and many businesses nearby. It also has a lot of options where restaurants are concerned. The hotels in this part of the city are cheaper which makes it one of the best places to stay in Istanbul if you are on a budget.
Aksaray
We debated on where to stay in Istanbul for a very long time and we eventually settled on Aksaray. This was further from the center but offered good hotels for a more budget price. It was also very well connected to all parts of the city.
Best Places To Stay In Sultanahmet

I’m going to dig straight into the best hotels and accommodations in Sultanahmet. Keep in mind that this is the most popular spot for many travelers despite the fact that the accommodation options available here can get costly. Don’t let that intimidate you, here are some of the options that you should consider about where to stay in Istanbul.
Sura Hagia Sophia Hotel (Luxury and Central)

⭐️ Rating: 8.5/10 (6744 Reviews)Price: $168 per night 📍Location: Divanyolu Cd. Alemdar Mh. Ticarethane Sk. No:10 Sultanahmet, Fatih, Istanbul
Luxury is not a problem when you are searching for where to stay in Istanbul in the Sultanahmet area. One of the best places to consider is the Sura Hagia Sophia hotel. It is located 2 minutes away from all the major attractions in the area. It is also on one of the most popular and lively streets in the region. There are so many restaurants and cafes that are right at the door step. This makes it one of the most ideal places to stay if money is not a constraint.
The hotel is an experience in itself. It has traditional Ottoman style architecture which merges naturally with its surroundings. Despite being centrally located, the hotel has an outdoor swimming pool and a botanical garden which means that you can relax the moment you get back after a tiring day walking around Istanbul. Did I mention that it has a Turkish bath, spa and sauna on site too?
Not only does it have an extensive breakfast that’s included in the room price, it has inhouse restaurants and a cafe. So you don’t have to worry about heading out. They even have vegetarian options which can be rather hard to find at times.
Lastly the rooms are luxurious and air conditioned with a coffee/tea bar to pick from mid day. Honestly, this is one of the best places to stay in if you want convenience and luxury. Especially if price is not a barrier.
Berk Guest House (Budget)
⭐️ Rating: 9.3/10 (773 Reviews)Price: $59 per night 📍Location: Kutlugün Sokak No. 29 Sultanahmet, Fatih, Istanbul
It’s really hard to find a place that can be considered budget when it comes to the Sultanahmet region. The Berk Guest house is one of the few that stands out and has incredible reviews. It is that its just 2 minutes away from the Blue mosque. We considered booking this one while we were day but unfortunately we were too late and it was already booked out. So if you want to stay central and want to book cheap, make sure to reserve it well in advance.
Aside from its central location, the Guest house is super cozy. It’s tagline is ‘Grandma’s house’ which definitely fits the the theme. It even has a rooftop balcony where you can chill at. If you are on a budget, you can get takeaway and sit here while enjoying the views. A cozy alternative to the fancy rooftop restaurants.
Despite its low price, the accommodation also provides breakfast in the rate. The breakfast is varied and is served fresh every morning. One of my considerations when visiting Istanbul was the air conditioning because on some days it can get really hot. The Berk Guest house has that too. So you are good all around.
Where To Stay In Sirkeci
I always tell people to look a little away from the center when booking their accommodation in Istanbul. Sirkeci still counts as the center but it has a lot more when it comes to options on where to stay in Istanbul.
Romance Istanbul Hotel Boutique Class (Luxury and Family Friendly)

⭐️ Rating: 9.3/10 (1,249 Reviews)Price: $222 per night 📍Location: Hudavendigar cad. 5 Sirkeci, Fatih, Istanbul
The Romance Istanbul hotel is one of the best luxury hotels in Sirkeci. It is not far away from the main Sultanahmet area which means that you can easily walk there. If not you could also take the tram. The best part about the locations is the vibe. It is a cross of the Turkish markets and bazaars with restaurants and cafes mixed in. It’s active late into the night and is safe.
The hotel itself is beautiful. The architecture is beautiful and inside of the hotel surpasses the exterior. One of the things that made me consider the Romance Istanbul was its family rooms. If you travel with young children you know the hassles of trying to find accommodation which will allow more than three people in a room and if they do, the rooms are tight. That isn’t the case here which makes it very attractive if you are traveling with kids.
It may not look large from the outside but on the inside the hotel has an indoor pool, a sauna, a fitness center, a hammam, a steam room and a hot tub. There are spa facilities that you can avail off too. Which makes it very attractive if you want to unwind after a day of visiting all the important landmarks in Istanbul.
Seres Hotel – Mid Range

⭐️ Rating: 8.6/10 (1,852 Reviews) Price: $126 per night 📍Location: Hudavendigar Cad No:25 Sirkeci, Fatih, Istanbul
We were looking out for a good place to eat at a rooftop restaurant in the center of the city when our accommodation recommended Roof Mezze 360. This is located in Sirkeci. It is part of the Seres Hotel which was how we discovered it. The Seres hotel looks pretty from the outside but with so much to see in the area, you could easily pass it by.
One of the best parts about the hotel is its location. You could easily walk to any of the main monuments in the historical center from here. The Sirkeci metro station and the tram station are both 230 meters away which makes this awesome as far as connectivity is concerned.
The rooms are clean, simple and comfortable. They have air conditioning and heating which are both important depending on which season you head to Istanbul in. The easy access to the rooftop restaurant is also very handy. We loved the food so much that we visited twice over. On both occasions we noted that the staff were extremely nice and courteous.
Where To Stay In Istanbul On A Budget – Aksaray
Before we head any further, I want to talk about where to stay in Istanbul if you are headed there on a budget. My top pick when it comes to where to stay in Istanbul is Aksaray because it is well connected and it has a lot of options. Not only do you get great budget places to stay at, you also have a large number of luxury accommodations that cost much less than the Sultanahmet or Sirekci area.
Where To Stay In Aksaray
We debated a lot on where to stay in Istanbul and eventually choose Aksaray because of its connectivity and the large number of budget hotels in the area. I was a bit nervous about this decision but in the end it worked really well.
Rayelin Hotel Old Town – Luxury
The Rayelin hotel may not look like much from the outside but it is one of the 4 star hotels in Aksaray. When you look at the location, it may seem like it is really far away from most of the attractions in Istanbul but it is located close to a main metro hub and a tram station. This means that you can easily move from location to location.
If you’ve noticed, the room rates are significantly lower compared to the hotels in the central region of Istanbul. It’s also a luxury hotel so you get more for your money if you don’t mind a little commute.
The rooms are clean and well equipped with all the amenities that you could want in a 4 star hotel. Some of the rooms even come with an attached kitchenette.
Breakfast is also provided. The spread includes Turkish, American and continental options. So you have a choice. If this doesn’t pick your fancy, there are a number of restaurants and cafes right next door. In fact, even though we stayed a little further from this location, we walked this way for the food almost every day.
Ottoman’s Life Hotel Delux – Luxury & Family Friendly
The Ottoman’s Life Hotel Delux is another amazing place to stay in if you want luxury. From the outside the building looks imposing but it does not compare to the inside of the hotel. The rooms are luxurious and spacious, complete with all the amenities that you would expect in a five star hotel. On that note, the Ottoman’s hotel also has family rooms which makes it convenient if you are traveling with young kids.
Aside from the rooms, you will find that the hotel also has a garden, a shared lounge and a fitness center. It even has free parking if that’s a concern.
But wait there’s more. There’s a spa and wellness center in the hotel itself. This includes an indoor pool which you can use in all seasons, a sauna and a hammam. So if you are looking for hammams in Istanbul, you don’t have to go far. It’s especially great if you’ve had a long day and just want to unwind without heading out.
There’s a inhouse restaurant too. It serves up a variety of different cuisines which is nice if you want a change. Its also convenient because you can just eat in the hotel.
Best House Hotel – Mid Range
The Best House Hotel is also located in Aksaray. Its a mid range hotel and despite not looking like much from the outside, it is very cozy on the inside. The rooms are modern, clean and spacious with large windows that allow plenty of light inside. They come equipped with an amazing bathroom. All the amenities like air conditioning, wifi, concierge service, tv, coffee machine etc are all available. So there’s no worries about that either.
Some rooms even have a balcony and those that don’t have a nice view of the city outside. Nice if you want to watch the bustling streets of the Istanbul from a quiet space. The location is also very good. Its close to the Aksaray metro station and to the tram station. So you can easily get from one part of the city to the next.
Hira Hotel – Budget
We stayed at the Hira Hotel while we were in Istanbul. They were renovating when we arrived so the above image does not do it justice. The rooms were simple and clean. We had a room with a double bed and two single beds which was perfect for us and our two children. The room had a small but functional bathroom.
Breakfast was included in the room rate. We had a similar breakfast every morning. It was typical Turkish style breakfast. Unlimited coffee and tea at all times in the day. I think what really set this hotel apart from the others was the staff. They went out of their way to make our stay pleasant.
We would have snacks delivered to our rooms sometimes after we came in. Little surprises of Turkish sweets or dates. Hot or cold tea depending on the weather. I definitely would recommend it. They also helped us arrange our transport to the airport and it turned out so much cheaper than getting a cab through one of the apps. So if you are looking for options on where to stay in Istanbul and want a safe budget option, bump this one to the top of the list.
Where To Stay In Istanbul For The Nightlife – Kabatas
If you look at the map of the city, you will see that on the East of Faith is Kabatas. The two are separated by the Golden Horn. Just like Faith, Kabatas has some places that I would recommend when it comes to where to stay in Istanbul.
It is worth noting that while you can take the tram across to the Sultanahmet area, it still further away. The tram stops aren’t all that frequent so you have to still walk. It wasn’t a big deal for us but for others it could be.
Anyways let’s get to the point. When it comes to where to stay in Istanbul for the nightlife, these are the best spots on the map.
1. Galata / Karakoy
Galata is one of the busiest areas in Kabatas. It is bustling with tourists who want to visit the historical sights in the area and it also has a lot of cool restaurants and cafes to sit and chill at. I found that the vibe here is completely different when compared to the Sultanahmet area where everyone is all rushed. Here even though it is a busy neighborhood, the pace is slightly slower. This is why it is considered one of the best locations when people search for options on where to stay in Istanbul.
Its filled with more budget accommodations which is something that you should keep in mind. I wouldn’t call it cheap though. It is still expensive just not as expensive as the central historic region near the Hagia Sophia.
2. Taksim Square
Taksim Square is another great place to consider when looking for options on where to stay in Istanbul. It is a little away from the historical center but close to Galata and other monuments. There are a number of good options when it comes to staying here. It’s proximity to Galata makes it a popular choice for people who are visiting for their second or third time or just people who love the more local vibe that it offers.
Where To Stay In Galata / Karakoy
If you are wondering where to stay in Istanbul and are curious about the options that Galata has to offer, then the following places to stay in the area should interest you. I’ve already gone through why staying in Galata makes sense. So I won’t repeat myself again.
Hotel Momento Golden Horn
Hotel Momento Golden Horn was one of the hotels that we visited because it has an amazing cafe. It is unrushed with amazing coffee and snacks. We initially needed a place to slow down because our children were tired and searched for a nice quiet place close to where we were. We liked it so much that we came back to it again a couple of times during our trip.
The hotel is pristine and clean. Ideally located if you want to visit the Galata region of Istanbul but just far enough that you are not in the touristy part of the city. In retrospect this is the hotel I would book if I came here again. Its close enough to public transport that you can move about easily and yet far enough that its quiet the moment you step in. It isn’t very expensive but you get a lot of luxury for the money you pay.
It also has a rooftop restaurant. While it isn’t one of the more central rooftop restaurants that social media has made popular, it is luxurious and comfortable with great food. Speaking of food, the rooms come with included breakfast. The breakfast is lavish and so totally worth it.
Many of the rooms have sea views so you don’t have to go seeking out a place to relax. Plus in room dining is an option for those busier days when you want to relax at home. While it may not look it, the hotel also has a garden which is nice if you want to unwind a bit.
Les Temps By Hilton

Les Temps is a new hotel that has been setup by Hilton and is located right in the heart of Galata. You can easily move about Galata from here which makes it extremely convenient if you are interested in the nightlife and the more boho scene. It isn’t far from the historic square either. You would have to walk a bit before you catch the tram.
The best part about the hotel is that it is new. So everything is extremely modern, clean and pretty much perfect. They have retained the Ottoman architecture when they made it which adds to the the whole vibe of the hotel. There are different views that you can choose from. One of the best is the sea view rooms that you get from this hotel.
The Les Temps has all the bells and whistles that you would expect in a luxury accommodation in Istanbul and then some. It even has a hammam, a spa and a steam room. I generally find that the Hilton does not compromise on quality when it comes to all these services.
If you want to cool off on a hot day then the hotel also has an open air pool which is great when you’ve had a long day seeing the sights in Istanbul.
DeCamondo Galata – Mid Range
Another great hotel that is located centrally in Galata is the DeCamondo Galata. The hotel is huge, spacious and located at just a 13 minutes walk away from the Spice bazaar. It isn’t as expensive as many of the other luxury hotels located in the area which makes it an interesting spot to consider when mulling over where to stay in Istanbul.
You could also walk to the tram station and take the tram from there to any location that you want. The walk is probably the only downside to staying here because it is uphill. Not unmanageable though. My kids were 4 and 6 when we visited and they easily surmounted it even though it was at the end of the day.
The rooms are nice spacious and clean too. The one thing that stands out with this hotel is the staff. They are polite, helpful and have consistently gotten rave reviews from the people who have stayed here.
“Super location, centrally located, extremely friendly and helpful staff, well-maintained room, no street noise, beautiful rooftop, good restaurant. We will definitely return to the same hotel.”
Kristel (read more reviews now!)
Breakfast is included in the room rate and you can choose from a variety of different options. There are even vegan options which is rather nice for people who prefer a meat free diet.
As you can see, there are loads of places and regions in Istanbul that make sense. Choosing can be hard but you have to make sure that you keep in mind how long you are staying, what’s your budget, your style of travel and more. Don’t fret too much about where to stay in Istanbul though. No matter what you pick, you can’t really go that wrong. The only difference will be how far you commute and the public transport makes that so much easier.
