April In Europe: 20 Amazing Locations To Add To Your Bucket List!

April is the start of the good weather in Europe. The temperature starts rising, the cold weather recedes, spring is in the air or almost! While April in Europe is not peak season, it definitely falls under what we would call shoulder season.

What’s that? Well as far as the weather is concerned, you are likely to have a mix of both good days and bad (with more good days normally!). It also is the season where tourists haven’t arrived in full swing. This means that most of the places are still relatively empty, the lines are non existent and the accommodation is relatively cheap!

Shoulder season is always our favorite season to travel and if you think along the same lines as us then April in Europe is the perfect time to visit. The question then is where? Honestly, I would still bet on most of the southern areas of the continent where the weather is better. There are a couple of interesting places in the North that you can spend April in Europe though.

Getting There: As the capital of Greece, Athens is easily accessible by air. Athens has a major international airport, Athens Eleftherios Venizelos Airport. You can easily get to the city by subway.

Getting There: The easiest way to get to the Algarve is by flying into Faro Airport (Gago Coutinho Airport). Alternatively, it’s easy to connect to the Algarve by bus or train from other parts of Portugal and Europe. 

Where To Stay: There are various towns that you can stay in throughout the Algarve. One of the most popular is Lagos. It’s a small city that has a traditional center with cobblestone streets.

In the historic Old Town you’ll find plazas, restaurants, bars, churches, the city’s marina, and more. Many famous Algarve beaches are just a short walk from the center of Lagos. The Baluarte da Vila Apartments are a great place to stay for location, comfort, and gorgeous views.

4. Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon is one of the perfect cities to spend April in Europe.

Location: Lisbon, Portugal

Getting There: Lisbon has an international airport, so it’s easy to fly to the city. There is a metro at the airport with a direct line to the city center. You can also use trains or buses to get to Lisbon from Spain.

Where To Stay: Hotel do Chiado in the city center with views of Sao Jorge Castle.

April is a lovely month to visit Lisbon. The city is quiet, the weather is improving and there are several interesting events during the month. Spend your visit wandering through the streets and visit some of the city’s excellent museums – don’t miss the Pavilion of Knowledge and the National Museum of Ancient Art. 

The Lisbon Oceanarium is the largest indoor aquarium in Europe and another good all-weather option. Lisbon also has great food and nightlife – you’ll find good restaurants and bars no matter where you stay in Lisbon – so be sure to go out at least a couple of times during your visit.

If you enjoy music, time for your visit towards the end of the month and head to Music Days in Belem, a three-day series of concerts at the Belem Cultural Centre. There is usually an interesting mix of classical and modern music and the building itself is fun to explore. 

Lisbon’s peaceful revolution in 1974 is marked by Freedom Day on 25 April. There’s a big parade in the city, so head to Avenida da Liberdade if you’re in town to experience the festivities for yourself.

Madeira is a fantastic location where you can spend some lovely time in April. The island is small and can be explored in a relatively short time. There are plenty of things to do in Madeira, especially if you love active holidays. 

Because it’s such a small island, you can be on top of Pico do Arieiro, the third highest in Madeira, in just 40 minutes from Funchal. April in Europe can’t get better than this!

This is a fantastic place to go and watch the sunrise from, because most of the time the clouds will be underneath you. Once the sun has risen, you can hike to Pico Ruivo, the highest on the island.

Another great thing to do in Madeira is visit Porto Moniz, where you can swim in the natural pools. Because the weather in Madeira is mild year round, they are open in April. The only proper beach in Madeira is in Seixal, and visiting it, you will be in for a treat, as it has volcanic black sand.

20. Amsterdam, Netherlands

Amsterdam is an epic city to spend April in Europe.

Getting There: Great connections with cities from all over Europe. You can travel to Amsterdam by train, bus, or airplane. Schiphol Airport is located just outside of Amsterdam and has a regular train connection that will take you to the city center in 15 minutes.

April in Europe is the perfect time to visit Amsterdam. The weather is usually really pleasant, with some warm days. But don’t forget to bring your umbrella for the occasional rain. In Amsterdam, you of course need to go on a canal cruise. That’s the best way to see the amazing canal houses from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. 

It’s also fun to take the (free) ferry to the NDSM wharf, a really hip and colorful neighborhood in Amsterdam Noord (the northern part of Amsterdam). Here you can see loads of cool street art, including an enormous mural of Anne Frank.

And did you know that April is the start of the tulip season? Make sure to visit several of the amazing parks in Amsterdam like the Vondelpark to check out the flowers. However, you’ll see most of the flower fields just outside of the city. A day trip from Amsterdam to the Keukenhof is highly recommended since that’s the capital of tulips! 

On April 26, Amsterdam turns into one big orange party town because it’s Kingsday! In case you didn’t know, that’s the birthday of King Willem-Alexander. There will be flea markets and concerts everywhere in the city. It’s an amazing event to experience when you’re visiting Amsterdam
