Babymoon in Nusa Penida – 4 Pros & 2 Cons You Should Know About

Shawn and I were deliberating over where we should head out to and we managed to narrow our choice down to Indonesia. Our aim was twofold. We were going to bring in his birthday and combine it as a babymoon destination.

With our flights booked to Bali (It was our second time on the island) we then had to narrow down where we wanted to stay. We chose Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan.

After a lot of research, the question that arose was whether a babymoon in Nusa Penida was wise? Being adventurous and falling in love with the just the thought of visiting the island meant that we went ahead with it and we realized that we did not regret our choice.

There are however pros and cons to this choice which I will delve into in just a bit.

Looking for a great place to stay in Nusa Penida? I would recommend Govardhan Bungalows. It is a budget location with some amazing rooms and even a pool!

Getting Across To Nusa Penida

Nusa Penida is an island off the coast of mainland Bali. It isn’t as big an island as Bali but it does attract a lot of tourists. Most people head here for day trips and don’t stay on the island which is what made the island appealing.

If you are thinking of a babymoon in Nusa Penida then consider staying on the island as a day trip is really hectic. Getting across from Bali during a day trip is taken care off by the organizers of the trip.

If you are considering staying on the island like us then you can get a fast boat to take you across. We have a detailed article about crossing from Bali to Nusa Penida which will help you out. The boat itself is comfortable so that is one thing less to worry about.

The only worry that you may have is the shenanigans to get into the boat. Luckily there are always people to help out and carry your luggage.

Finding Accommodation On Nusa Penida

One of the reasons why we looked at Nusa Penida was because it had a lot of luxury and semi-luxury accommodation available at reasonable prices. The idea was that if the activities became too strenuous, relaxing at a lovely pool would be the way to go.

With that in mind we chose Govardhan Bungalows which was affordable and had the amenities that we wanted. In retrospect, I have to say that I was pretty happy with the place we chose.

One of the things that I loved about it was the view from the breakfast tables. I could watch the sunrise over the horizon with Mount Agung in the backdrop. Scenic and peaceful.

Pros Of A Babymoon In Nusa Penida

There are a lot of pros to choosing to spend your babymoon in Nusa Penida. Let’s take a look at all the reasons why it makes a great place to be in.

1. The Island Is Gorgeous

A babymoon in Nusa Penida is filled with amazing views.

There is no denying the fact that Nusa Penida is gorgeous. It has some of the most breath-taking views that I have seen in my life. In fact, it is so beautiful that even though it is a bit out of the way, troves of tourists visit the island on day tours every day.

If you play your cards right, you can easily escape the crowds. You just need to know when to visit which location.

2. Accommodation Isn’t Too Expensive

Nusa Penida has a lot of different types and ranges of accommodation available. From budget to luxury, you can take your pick. The nice thing about it is that the luxury accommodation isn’t unaffordable. So you can choose to indulge and pamper yourself.

3. The Food Is Great

While the food caters to the western palate (it took awhile for us to realize this!!), there are a lot of places to eat and the food is good. There are even vegan friendly spots to catch a bit to eat. So if pregnancy has messed up your diet, don’t worry. There will always be something that you can try.

Oh and if you want local Indonesian food, then head to the local market.

4. There Are Loads Of Things To Do

Car temple

One of the curious things to do was to visit the Car temple. Yes! You read it right!

There are so many things to do in Nusa Penida that you will find yourself short of time if you stay for anything shorter than 4 days. From temples to beaches and cliff faces. The island has it all. You can choose the activities based on your own capabilities and restrictions.

I would recommend not pushing yourself too much on the strenuous activities and to bear in mind that you may not be able to do everything you could do pre-pregnancy. This however is variable depending on which week of pregnancy you are traveling in and your doctors advise/restrictions.

Cons Of A Babymoon In Nusa Penida

There are a number of reasons why you may decide against a babymoon in Nusa Penida. We weighed our options carefully. I think some of the things that you must keep in mind is which week of pregnancy you are in, the restrictions imposed on you by your doctor and your physical capabilities.

1. The Roads Aren’t Great

One of the biggest concerns that I had when we finalized on a babymoon in Nusa Penida was the roads. While the main road has been tared and done up, the roads to the different sites are in various states of disrepair. This makes for bumpy ride.

Aside from this, I would highly recommend not heading out on a motorbike if you are not experienced riding one. We spotted a lot of people who got injured because they slipped and fell.

2. Medical Facilities Are On Mainland Bali

Yes you heard that right. If you need any medical facilities, you need to head back to the mainland. This was one thing that really made me antsy.

Well there you have it. The pros and the cons to a babymoon in Nusa Penida. I personally loved it even though I was perpetually tempted to do the riskier stuff. That however is just me. In retrospect, I enjoyed chilling and enjoying the views almost as much.

Now if only I was allowed to lay my hands on some of those cocktails…
