Actually narrowing down on places to spend July in Europe was so so hard. We received endless suggestions when we asked people this question on many forums. Eventually we turned to the travel experts and locals for their top suggestions on July in Europe.

Getting There: It’s a very easy city to fly to and there are so many things to do in Portugal’s stunning capital. Lisbon has a single airport which handles both domestic and international flights and is only 6km away from the city center.

Where To Stay: Baixa district and Alfama are great areas to stay as a tourist.

With 260 days of sunshine a year, friendly locals, and beautiful sight to see, Lisbon is the perfect weekend getaway in July in Europe. There are so many things to do in Lisbon such as the famous Yellow Bus Tram Tour.

The most popular tour is Tram 28 which is a public tram service that stops at most of the city’s main attractions.

A single ride on the 28 is much cheaper than a sightseeing tour. However it is a commuter line for most of the locals and usually very crowded.

I recommend taking the Tram Tour run by The Yellow Bus Tour Company. 

You can also visit the Lisbon Story Centre, Ride a Tuk Tuk and admire Praça do Commercio. Miradouro da Senhora do Monte, meaning Lady of the Hill is the highest viewpoint in Lisbon is perched on the hillside in the Graca neighbourhood.

It offers perfect panoramic views of the stunning old quarters and castle to the downtown district of the city and beyond.

If you go for a longer trip you can also take a day trip to Sintra which is a 40 train from Lisbon. With fairy-tale-like castles and the most enchanting gardens, Sintra is a beautiful place to visit particularly in July.

Getting There: You can get to Venice from Venice Marco Polo airport which is only 30/40 minutes away by bus, water bus or taxi.

There’s also another airport you could get to which is called Venice Treviso where low-cost airlines fly such as Ryanair and Wizz Air.

Why is Prague such a great place to spend in July in Europe? If you like warm temperatures, July may be the best month to come to the city of a hundred spires. You’ll be able to walk around wearing pretty dresses and get those perfect Instagram shots.

It’s actually no secret that Prague in summer is amazing. And the hordes of tourists only confirm that. But it’s okay, you can still have a great time and avoid most of the crowds if you plan accordingly.

Avignon is an offbeat location to spend July in Europe.

Getting There:  While there is a regional airport in Avignon (the Avignon Provence Airport), most visitors will fly into Paris and then take a 2.5-hour high speed train (TGV) ride from Paris to Avignon. 

Where To Stay:  Stay at the Hotel de l’Horloge.  This hotel has an excellent location inside the city walls on Avignon’s town square, Place de l’Horloge.

There are many top Avignon attractions to explore any time of year.  Avignon is famous for being the seat of the papacy in the 14^th century, so you’ll certainly want to tour the Palais des Papes.  This medieval Gothic building was the residency of the popes and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Other historic Avignon attractions include the Pont Saint-Bénézet, famous as the bridge in the French nursery rhyme ‘Sur le Pont D’Avignon’.  

Take a walk along the fortified city walls, the Remparts d’Avignon, and enjoy a bird’s-eye view of the city and the river.  Stroll through the Place de l’Horloge and admire the incredible architecture of Avignon’s city hall and opera house.

Where To Stay: As Kefalonia is one of the largest islands in Greece, you need to decide which part of the island you’d prefer to stay.

For example, Fiskardo is a relaxing and beautiful fishing village in the North of Kefalonia with access to stunning beaches, water activities and historical sites.

If you’re looking for more of a younger, partying vibe then perhaps the South of Kefalonia would be better in places like Sami or Argostoli both with equally as pretty beaches.

The group of islands known as Ionian Islands in Western Greece includes Zante, Zakynthos and the largest, Kefalonia. Kefalonia is one of the best places to visit in Greece if you’re looking for idyllic beaches, traditional tavernas and Greek-myth locations.

7. Paros, Greece

If you are looking for a nice warm destination to spend July in Europe, then consider Paros in Greece.

Getting There: You can fly from Athens to Paros airport, which is located in the southwestern part of the island, a 15-minute drive to Parikia, or take a ferry from Piraeus port.

The journey times are  40 minutes and 3 hours, respectively. If you want to combine a visit to Paros with visiting Milos, Naxos, Santorini or Mykonos, you can easily catch a ferry to any of these islands. 

Where To Stay: If you’re wondering where to stay in Paros, the two best locations are Parikia and Naoussa. Naoussa has an excellent selection of incredible hotels, such as Comfy Suites Paros, while Parikia boasts great budget options like Hotel Zannet. 

Located on the Aegean Sea, off the coast of Athens, Paros draws visitors with its Cycladic charm and pristine beaches. 

What makes this island a great destination to visit in July in Europe is that Paros is not as popular as other islands, such as Santorini or Mykonos.

So, even in July, Paros won’t feel overcrowded. July also boasts perfect beach weather, with temperatures ranging between 24 and 31 degrees Celcius and plenty of sunshine.

Some of the best beaches not to be missed while visiting Paros are Monastiri and Kolimbithres Beach.

8. Morcote, Switzerland

If you are looking at Switzerland for July in Europe then consider Morcote!

Location: Morcote is located in Southern Switzerland in the Ticino canton.

The village is specifically located on the lakeside of picturesque Lake Lugano. It is very close to the Italian border, however  the lake separates the land in between.

With many picturesque locations in Ticino Switzerland, the village of Morcote is worth your time visiting in July in Europe.

Ticino is the sunniest canton of Switzerland, being so close to the Mediterranean, making it 28°c as daily average, and summer evenings dipping to an average of only 18°c. 

Morcote has a rich history, with the 14th century Church of Santa Maria del Sasso as one of the highlights and photogenic points in the village.

Morcote is best for many outdoor activities during July, such as to visit the local gardens, walking the lakeside promenade and of course stopping at a local restaurant for something Italian or Swiss to eat.

Find a table at Osteria Portici on the terrace for some relaxation with good food. Morcote also has a few boutique shops for buying something local if you want to take something home with you. 

From Morcote you can also explore more of the area with the local boat, which departs multiple times a day during the summer to locations such as to Melide, Lugano and Gandria.

They also offer a day ticket just to enjoy Ticino by lake. This a good trip to take if you are spending July in Europe here.

If you love big cities then you should consider spending July in Europe in London!

13. Reykjavik, Iceland

Looking for dramatic landscapes and epic outdoors to spend July in Europe? Reykjavik is one of the best spots to be!

Getting There: Fly into Iceland’s Keflavik International Airport and either rent a car or take public transit to reach Reykjavi, 45 minutes to the east of the airport.

July is the perfect month to visit Reykjavik- you’ll have extremely long days to explore the city (and, if you time your visit with the beginning of the month, you may even get to experience the famed Midnight Sun!) and the weather is pleasant and more predictable than the fickle spring and winter weather. 

You can already see why spending July in Europe in Reykjavik is a good idea!

Another awesome thing about Reykjavik in July is that it’s the best time to see the country’s incredible wildlife, including whales and puffins.

From the city, you can either take a boat out to Akurey Island, which is home to over 30,000 puffins in the summertime or, alternatively, out to the Atlantic Ocean and around its Old Harbour, where you can see minke whales, humpbacks, and porpoises. 

While Reykjavik is a small city, there’s plenty to explore here. Some not to be missed sites include Hallgrimskirkja, a church that’s been designed to resemble the country’s famed columnar basalt cliffs, and Harpa, the ultra-modern opera hall that looks out onto the harbor. 

One of the best things about Reykjavik, though, is that it serves as an excellent homebase for your day trips around western and southern Iceland. For example, many Golden Circle tours, which hit the Gullfoss Waterfall, Geysir Geothermal Area, and Þingvellir National Park, depart from the city.

Alternatively, you can rent a car and explore some more other gems, like Reykjadalur Hot Springs, a geothermal river in the Icelandic highlands where you can soak in steamy water.

Friðheimar, a tomato-themed restaurant where you can take shots of Icelandic birch liquor out of a hollowed-out tomato; or the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, which offers some of the most dramatic scenery in the country, all within less than a two hour drive from the city.
