Bergen in March is just on the tail end of winter, when the days start getting longer and things begin to thaw out. It’s a great time to go, between the winter high season and the spring tourists. If you’re looking to enjoy one of the many Bergen day trips, you can hunt down waterfalls that will be powerful as the snow melts. Or, you can stick around the city to enjoy its transition into spring.

Get to know the town center by strolling around, and make sure you visit the old harbor Bryggen (a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site!). Ride up the Floibanen funicular to enjoy beautiful views over Bergen and stay for a cozy drink at the cafe. Don’t miss out on exploring the gorgeous fjords by boat

Cruises run all year long, so it’s always time to explore the beauty of Norway’s fjords. Bergen offers many interesting museums, such as the Maritime Museum, the KODE Art Museum, and the Hanseatic Museum chronicling Bergen’s history.

Norway is known for its cozy cafe culture, so you’ll find many comfortable cafes where you can warm up with a nice cup of coffee if you get chilly. While the weather can be somewhat unpredictable in March in Europe, don’t miss out on getting out of the city for some fresh mountain air. When it comes to Bergen layer up and head inland for great driving, hiking trails, or skiing.

Folgefonna National Park not too far from Bergen boasts beautiful glaciers and amazing sights that will take your breath away.

Tours In Bergen That You Should Consider: You can explore Bergen’s past and present with a walking tour. Another alternative is to take the food and culture walk. If walking isn’t your thing, try the Segway tours.

Take a guided tour Nærøyfjorden, Flåm And Stegastein. It also includes a cruise so it is really popular. The Mostraumen Fjord Cruise is another great expedition.

16. Bucharest, Romania

Bucharest is a really amazing place to spend March in Europe.

Bucharest is a really amazing place to spend March in Europe.

Location: Bucharest, Romania

Temperatures in Bucharest, Romania in March:

Low: 2°C/ 35.6oF

High: 12°C/ 53.6oF

Getting There: Getting to Bucharest in March is effortless as there are several daily international flights arriving to Bucharest Otopeni, the main airport in the capital. There are lots of low cost flights from other European cities, making it an ideal destination to visit in March in Europe.

Where to stay: Bucharest is such a hidden gem and a vastly underrated European destination. The best place to stay in Bucharest is in the Old Town. You’ll be very close to the main attractions but also be in the quaint maze of historic cobblestoned streets.

For luxury travelers, staying close to Herastrau is a great idea, but tourists will have to rely on public transport to go to points of interest.

Apart from the center, Bucharest is vastly residential, so first time travelers are especially encouraged to stay in the Old Town.

The most well-known attraction in Bucharest is the People’s Palace, which is the second largest building in the world. It does humble you with its imposing appearance, which is precisely the point of its architecture.

A post communist city, Bucharest can feel ugly and gritty, especially in comparison to other prettier European cities. But it’s its greyness that makes it charming and unusual. Don’t let that deter you, embrace it as you’ll see a new emerging Berlin.

Walk along Calea Victoriei and see why, once upon a time, Bucharest was named Little Paris. Admire its impressive parks such as Cismigiu and Herastrau and walk around Primaverii district with its stunning baroque villas and mansions still well preserved to this day.

Bucharest during Spring feels like a young city where locals love to party and celebrate life. You’ll find plenty of terraces and cool bars with experimental drinks and cocktails. There’s a new wave of Scandi coffee shops for digital nomads, too.

While the scars of communism can be clearly seen all over the city, what makes Bucharest especially cool is the new movements to transform it into a young and eclectic hub for the next generations.

Tours In Bucharest To Consider: Bohemian Bucharest Markets and Mahallas Walking Food Tour is a great place to start off when it comes to exploring the city.

There are a couple of really cool day trips that you can take from Bucharest. Transylvania and Dracula Castle Tour from Bucharest is one of the most popular trips.

You can even take a day tour to Bulgaria which is really cool if you have a short time in the area and want to pack things into an itinerary.

The Royal Alcazar of Seville is a must-visit. The architecture of the palaces is stunning, and the gardens will wow you with their beauty. March is a wonderful time to stroll the gardens in the sunshine.

Step inside the Seville Cathedral to admire the dazzling Capilla Mayor, and climb the ramps to the top of the bell tower for panoramas over the city. The cathedral is one of the largest in the world.

Another place to go for views is Las Setas, the Mushrooms of Seville. This is a modern multi-level structure, with a walking path at the very top and a viewing gallery. Sunset is a great time to be on the top level, taking in the views and watching the lights come on.

Wander the streets of Barrio Santa Cruz, the old Jewish Quarter, or venture across the river to Triana, where you can shop for ceramics. You’ll find brightly-colored ceramics of every kind from which to pick your souvenirs!

Depending on when Easter falls in a particular year, Semana Santa can happen in March. This is a week of celebration in Seville, with many processions with ornate floats and people costumed in traditional pointed hats. This makes it an epic spot to spend March in Europe.

Jaen in southern Spain is one of the most underrated cities in Europe to visit, and March is a wonderful time of the year to experience the blossoms when walking through the forest up to the hilltop castle and lookout of the city. There are a lot of great things to do in Jaen other than walking to the castle, though.

The province is the biggest producer of olive oil in Spain and among the leading in Europe. With this, there is no surprise that you can expect amazing olive oil tastings on a trip from the city to any of the many olive oil farms.

Jaen was also one of the victims of the bombings during the Civil War and it is a must to visit the underground shelters that were built as a result. Jaen also houses one of the most impressive Arab Baths sitting under the Palacio de Villardompardo. Dominating the city center you find the majestic Jaen Cathedral which is a must-visit.

On years that Easter comes early, you might even be lucky and experience the Semana Santa celebration when the Holy Week processions fill up the streets with large floats being carried among long lines of Nazarenos – men, women, and children dressed in religious dresses with pointy hats resembling the Ku Klux Clan.

Nonetheless, Jaen will make you fall in love and wonder why it is not more visited. It is a lovely place to spend March in Europe.

If you are looking for a perfect getaway for March in Europe, consider the marvelous city of Salamanca, Spain. Salamanca in March is chilly, but it is dry, with 7 hours of sunshine a day. There are some days when the temperature can get up to even 18°C/64°F.

Daytime in Salamanca in March comes with sun, but chilly mornings and evenings seek warmer dressing. So, layered dressing is the best bet for visiting Salamanca in the first month of spring.

Cities like Madrid, Barcelona, and Seville might be the most popular city destinations in Spain in spring.

But, magical Salamanca is everything that cultural enthusiasts, history buffs, and romantic seekers would expect of a perfect Spanish gateway. The Old City of Salamanca is a World Heritage Site with impressive architecture (think of the Romanesque, Renaissance, Baroque, and Ultra Baroque buildings on every corner) and a vibrant university city.

Salamanca is a city of culture, science, and history that makes visitors fall in love with ‘the essence of Spain’. Spring (March – April) and autumn (October – November) are the best time to visit Salamanca for the most pleasant weather (Temperatures in Salamanca rise to 39°C/102.2°F in summer and fall up to -10°C /14°F in winter).

Depending on the dates on which Easter falls, Salamanca in March hosts two festivals: Semana Santa (Holy Week) and Lunes de Aguas.

The celebration of Semana Santa in Salamanca is one of the most spectacular events in Spain. Around 10 thousand penitents organized in 18 fraternities carrying floats with sculptures of the Passion of Jesus Christ along streets of the Old City in 24 processions during Holy Week.

While Semana Santa is a solemn Catholic event, Lunes de Aguas is an easy-going and fun holiday.

Lunes de Aguas holiday is celebrated only in the Salamanca province in Spain on Monday after Easter. Lunes de Aguas is a holiday that commemorates the return of ‘ladies of the night to the city’.

A story says that in the 16th century, King Felippe II banned prostitution in Salamanca during Lent by expelling the ladies of the night from the city. Prostitutes were allowed to return to Salamanca after Lent, and a celebration of their return took place.

Today families and friends go for a picnic on the banks of the Tormes River to celebrate the holiday with a traditional Hornazo de Salamanca meat pie and wine. Another great reason to spend March in Europe in Salamanca.

Tours In Salamanca To Consider: Seville is a fabulous place to visit in Spain for its cultural and historical heritage. Take a private walking tour with a local in Salamanca to gain valuable insights into the history and culture of Salamanca.

21. Ticino, Switzerland

Heading to Switzerland? Ticino is one of the best places to spend March in Europe.

Heading to Switzerland? Ticino is one of the best places to spend March in Europe.

Location: Ticino, Switzerland

Temperatures in Ticino, Switzerland in March:

Low: 2°C/ 35.6oF

High: 7°C/ 44.6oF

Getting There: You can easily reach Ticino from Northern Italy or anywhere within Switzerland by taking the train or driving. If arriving by air, you can fly into Milan Malpensa Airport.

Where To Stay: Lugano makes an ideal base for exploring Ticino. It’s the main city of the Ticino Canton and is the center of the action, offering the most hotels, restaurants and convenience. Plus, you can wake up to the gorgeous Lugano Lake everyday.

Ticino can be chilly in March, but much warmer than the rest of Switzerland and with ample sunshine. It’s warm enough to spend time outdoors and catch the first bits of spring.

Ticino is located in the Italian speaking region of Switzerland. A far cry from the snowy mountains and cold cities in the rest of Switzerland during March, Ticino is a pocket of sunshine, warmth and color.

While here, you may often feel like you’re in a southern Italian village. One of the best places to visit in March would be Lake Lugano, the largest and most scenic lake of Ticino. Morcote and Gandria are two villages along Lugano Lake that will transport you into an old Italian film with their old-world charms and winding cobbled streets.

Locarno boasts yet another idyllic lake, with an impressive cathedral overlooking it, well worth the steep climb. For those craving more snow in spring, head up to Bosco Gurin, a charming traditional Swiss village featuring old wooden chalets and a ski resort.

And of course, no visit to Ticino is complete without visiting Lavertezzo, a small village that is now insta-famous for its ice blue river and stone arch bridge. On a sunny day, you can even swim in March.

Otherwise, enjoy the village and surrounding natural beauty. For a more off the beaten path village worth visiting, head to Foroglio. This village is actually one of a handful along a winding road in a mountain valley. All villages are stunning, but Foroglio boasts its own onsite waterfall. It is an epic place to spend March in Europe.

22. Istanbul, Turkey

Istanbul is a lovely place to spend March in Europe.

Istanbul is a lovely place to spend March in Europe.

Location: Istanbul, Turkey

Temperature In Istanbul, Turkey in March:

Low:  9.9°C / 49.8°F

High: 10.6°C / 51.8°F

Getting There: Istanbul is really easy to get to, especially since it’s one of the most popular transit cities in the world. This means you can get flights here from pretty much any country.

Most flights will arrive at Istanbul airport (IST), which is on the European side of the city. It’s about 50 km from the city, but regular shuttle buses run often from the airport to Sultanahmet, the historic city. There are two bus companies, the HavaIST shuttle buses, and the IETT buses. Both are pretty reliable and convenient.

Top tip: I recommend you get an Istanbulkart from the airport, as you can use this on all public transport in the city. It’s a bit of a pain to get it from the city, as you need to go to a metro station that sells it, so make sure you pick this up from the machine before getting the bus into the city.

There is also a metro from the airport into the city. You can take the M11 Metro line from the airport to wherever you need to go.

Where To Stay: If it’s your first time in Istanbul, I recommend you stay in Sultanahmet which is the historic district of Istanbul (Cheers Hostel is ideally located). This is where you’ll find many of the top attractions such as The Hagia Sophia, The Blue Mosque, Basilica Cistern, and The Grand Bazaar.

Istiklal street is also a good area to stay, as this is a thriving area with lots of shops, restaurants, and bars. It’s also near the Galata Tower and overlooks the Golden Horn.

Istanbul is a great city to visit in March. It’s the beginning of spring which means the weather is starting to warm up, and yet it doesn’t have the busiest crowds. March is the beginning of the shoulder season in Istanbul which means cheaper prices and less crowds – everyone wins!

March in Europe also sees great weather. The winter in Istanbul is usually very harsh with wet and windy weather, and sometimes even snows. However, March is when you will see this harsh weather move away and the sun starts to shine again.

It is still cold in March but it has only a few days of rain, which is perfect for sightseeing. And because it’s the quiet season, you won’t have to queue a long time to get into attractions – sweet!

One of the main reasons to visit Istanbul in March is for the Turkey Athletics Championships, which takes place in the first week of March. This is one of the biggest sporting events in Turkey and is especially fun to watch.

The best things about Istanbul is that even on rainy and cold days in March, you can still go out and explore. Many of its attractions are indoors and warm, such as Topkapi Palace, the mosques, The Grand Bazaar, and of course Istanbul’s museums. You can see why it is a great place to spend March in Europe.

Tours In Istanbul To Consider: There are 1, 2 and 3 day guided tours to Istanbul that are conducted routinely. When it comes to exploring the food scene, try the taste of two continents food tour.

If you are looking for a bit f luxury then consider the Bosphorus Sunset Cruise on a luxury yacht.

23. London, United Kingdom

London is one of the best cities to spend March in Europe.

London is one of the best cities to spend March in Europe.

Location: London is located in the southeast of the UK.

Temperature In London, United Kingdom in March:

Low:  6°C / 42.8°F

High: 12°C / 53.6°F

Getting There: London has four main international airports: Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Luton, and is served by a huge number of mainstream and budget airlines, making it one of the easiest places in the world to get to from just about anywhere.

Where To Stay: London is a huge city and people can get a bit overwhelmed deciding where to stay. If money is no object, then staying in the boroughs of Kensington or Westminster will give you easy access to all the top sights.

However these areas are extremely expensive and it’s important to note that London has really excellent public transport, meaning that you can stay in a cheaper area outside the city center and still easily get to where you want to go in 30-45 minutes.

The weather in London in March can vary from year to year. Sometimes there can be a late cold snap and even a touch of frost. Other years you can get mild, sunny days and a real sense that Spring is on the way.

London is one of the best cities in the world and can be visited at any time of year, but March is a great time to visit because the worst of the winter will be over, but the crowds of tourists won’t yet have descended.

In March you’ll find the trains and tubes less busy, restaurants easier to get into, and tourist attractions will have shorter queues. Hotel prices will be cheaper too – great for those on a budget as London is a notoriously expensive city.

There’s so much to see and to in London, from historic sites like Buckingham Palace and the Tower of London, to the excellent (and free!) museums and galleries where you can see the best of the world’s art and antiquities, to huge parks and green spaces, to activities like the riding the London Eye, taking a boat cruise along the River Thames, or seeing a West End show.

The city has dozens of different districts, each one with its own feel, from trendy Soho, full of bars and restaurants, to Westminster, the seat of government, to the bright lights and theatres of Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square, to colorful Notting Hill or historic Greenwich.

Tours In London To Consider: There are loads of things to do in London. Getting around the city can be expensive and exhausting. Try using the hop on hop off bus. You can even take a tour of the highlights of the city.

Did you know that you can visit Stonehenge, Windsor Castle, and Bath from London?
