Little Adam’s Peak: An Easy Trek Through Paradise

Little Adam’s Peak: An Easy Trek Through Paradise

While we could have done Little Adam’s peak on our first day in Ella, we chose to do the trek on the next day. It was largely due to the fact that I was tired, and I thought that the trek would be difficult. I should have done my research before. The forecast of rain did also contribute to the decision too. Contrary to what I believe, the trek up to Little Adam’s peak is easy.

In fact, the route that we took to the Demodara Nine Arch bridge was harder and even that was an easy trek. That being said I would suggest that everyone who visits Ella, should make a bit of time in their schedule to catch a glimpse of the views that this trek has to offer. The best views however are at sunrise and sunset.

Best Time To Trek To Little Adam’s Peak

Honestly, I think that the best time to trek to Little Adam’s peak is either early morning or in the evening when the it isn’t too hot. This could differ depending on the time of the year you visit. We were in Ella in September and we were more than happy to be out and about in the cooler hours.

We set out at 7 o’clock in the morning happy that we were the early birds and the best part was that we had managed to clock a good number of hours of sleep at night.

As we walked towards the trail, we took a deep breath of fresh air and commented about how the sun was up and how beautiful everything was.

A little further into our walk we watched as we saw people coming back from their trek up Little Adam’s peak. That’s when it hit us. We weren’t early birds. We were late!

If we had only thought about it more, we would have realized that if we got up early enough, we would have caught a glimpse of the sun rising. I can only imagine how beautiful the sight of the golden rays in the valley must have been.

Little Adam’s Peak Entrance Fee

One of the best things about visiting this amazing spot is that there is no entrance fee! I’m all for exploring the outdoors especially if there is no price attached to it like in so many other locations. Another important point is the fact that you don’t need to hire a guide to get here.

Google maps does a great job of directing you towards Little Adam’s peak. All you need to do is follow the main road till you reach Ella Flower Garden Resort. A smaller mud road runs at the side of it and this is the road that you will have to follow. It gives you a picturesque view of the valleys covered with tea gardens on either side.

We stumbled across a pair of Asian tourists who confirmed that we were on the right path. They also mentioned that we should take the big gate and not the smaller one. That information skewed us a bit because we did take the wrong path. You can check the image above to see which one you should take.

The detour wasn’t too bad because we hiked through a tea plantation to reach the original path that we had wandered off. The original path is wide, easy to use and eventually leads to a staircase. The moment you reach the stairs, you will find that the inclination changes.

Is It Hard To Climb Little Adam’s Peak?

The climb is still easy, and I have seen people of all ages and levels of fitness climbing it. If you do get tired, you can stop and sit.

Trust me… Whether you are tired or not, you probably are going to want to stop and look around. There are a few portions of the climb that don’t have steps. It isn’t hard to get through them so don’t panic.

At The Top Of Little Adam’s Peak

I was surprised to see a statute of Buddha at the very top. The statue captures the feeling that you feel when you reach the top. It is quiet and serene despite the number of people who visit it. It is also clean.

If you reach up somewhere in the afternoon, I can expect that it can get hot. Carry a bottle of water because there isn’t much on your path unless you head back to the main road.

At the peak, the views are even more gorgeous that the way up. It provides a gorgeous backdrop for a lot of beautiful photographs. On our way back, we noticed that there was a path that bifurcated from ours and headed out to the 9 Arch bridge. Since we had done it on the day before, we just headed back the way we came.

All in all, we really loved the leisurely pace at which we tackled Little Adam’s peak. I still wish we had thought of visiting it for the sunrise but that didn’t stop us from enjoying the time we spent there.

What To Pack For Your Trek Up Little Adam’s Peak

Since the trek is an easy one and you aren’t like to spend too much time going both up and down, you don’t really have to carry much.

Make sure you have a decent pair of trekking shoes (I love the Columbia pair that I have.). Carry a jacket or a windcheater if you head out early morning and it is cold. Water and hat/cap are a must especially mid day. That’s about it!

Finally, if you aren’t very confident about hiking up to Little Adam’s peak on your own, I would recommend taking a tour to the top. You will trek through some of the tea plantations with a local guide before you head up to the top of Little Adam’s peak.

From there, you will head on to Demodara Nine Arches bridge. The local guide will give you insight on the surroundings and the history of the area. It is a great way to discover the Sri Lankan countryside.
